I am confused about the Minus and Plus of types of DVD R

Hi all, i have been having wonderfull help here, thanks to you all.

I am now getting very confused about the differences between the Plus and Minus sign that you find on ALL blank DVD's, is there a simple explanation regards the advantages/disadvantages of these different sorts of disc.

A search, not only here in this forum, but in Google or Yahoo would produce thousands upon thousands of hits.

But to contribute positively, + is newer. - is older. Older players may recognize - more because, at the time, - was only available. Newer players will be able to (most likely) play both. + can be written as Rom, whereas - cannot.
