I know this is like the thread that will not die (sorry!), but I am having a heck of a time getting this to properly rip and burn. I've read through the thread, but the info is a little sparse for what little experience I have with making backups. I've always used DVDFab (the free version) and Nero Recode with great success, so bear with me.

Here are all the things I've tried, and of all those tries, I've ended up with the same number of discs that are either unplayable, or are only playable in my computer, but not in a regular, stand-alone dvd player. Some of the steps may be a little confounded in my head because at this point, I have a stack of useless dvd's and I've tried every option that seems like it'll work, and the process to get said unplayable dvd's has basically been guesswork within all the programs I'm trying to run.

If anyone has some helpful advice or a kindergarten walkthrough of what programs to use, in which order, with what options checked, I would appreciate it so very much. From what I'm gathering, I have the right programs, but something, somewhere, isn't quite right, and I'm not sure if it's a setting on my end or if I've somehow gotten the names of the programs all confuddled in my head (DVDFab, DVDDecryptor, DVDFab HD, etc., etc. all kind of start to look the same after a while).

-I used DVDFab Platinum 5.2.2.2 to rip folders to my hard drive (sorry, I'm not quite sure what that process is called...I know the other way to rip is to .iso, but that's about it). Got the video and audio folders, and attempted to burn the contents of the video folder with Nero Recode 6, and ended up with a disc with the folders burned onto it, but of course, it wasn't playable.

-With the files previous ripped, I used DVD Shrink 3.2 to shrink them using the "backup" button. I selected my "backup target" as "iso image and burn with DVD Decryptor", then selected my second drive as my "target image file", and it burned successfully, or so I thought. It was playable in my computer, but not on the stand-alone dvd player.

-I went through the same process as above, but instead did "select backup target: > iso image file", and saved it to my desktop. Then I tried burning with Active Iso Burner, which gave me another disc that wouldn't play in the player.

-Used DVDFab Platinum 5.2.2.2 to try to burn the full disc directly from the movie in the drive onto another disc in my secondary drive. The only option checked was "copy dvd-video (video_ts folder)", and this resulted in what DVDFab told me was an error (wish I'd saved the error message now, but in my frustration, I closed it). Again, it was playable in my computer, but not on the stand-alone dvd player.

At this point, I can't see any options that I haven't tried, and I'm not sure if I'm just missing a checkbox somewhere, or if I'm royally screwing up this whole process by missing a crucial step. I am completely lost here, and if anyone can help, I'll name my first born after you*.

(*ok, not really, unless you have a really awesome name, but I WILL be forever grateful)

Thanks for the quick reply, Bryston! I got as far as finishing with FixVTS, but when I open everything in DVD Shrink, I get another folder now, since running FixVTS, called Unreferenced Materials, and it's added into all the disc information.

It doesn't say anything about that in the guide, so I'm not sure if I'm supposed to remove it, or leave it, or what's supposed to happen with it. Any ideas?

Sorry I offended you garmoon. Being a newbie I didn't realize that ones and zeros instead of Is and Os along with erratic spacing (1 D 10 T)in the spelling of I D I O T should have been soo obvious to me. Silly me, I thought it might be some kind of cool little inside joke or "code" all you senior/addict members use.

Anyway, thanks bryston for answering my question. And garmoon I'll try not to be soo DENSE in the future so I don't offend you again.

Won't that drop the quality of the main movie by quite a lot though? The Unreferenced Materials are several hundred MB.

I believe unreferenced material is a form of copy/backup discouragement. If you use anydvd to rip to Harddisk, unreferenced material will be gone. Much like running fixvts. Infact anydvd employs a SIMILAR capability. I have found NO need to use any program after anydvd except of course the transcoder/encoder. Encoder obviously preferred :D you could also use dvdfab HD decrypter, but...it doesnt always do a CLEAN job. I suppose anydvd can be guilty of it though from time to time. Never had it happen to me though. Ok...maybe once ;)

I didn't have the Unreferenced Material folder in my Full Disc folder until after I ran FixVTS. As I mentioned a couple posts back, I've run DVDFab Platinum over and over, and tried burning it with DVD Shrink, in DVDFab Platinum itself, and with Nero Recode - none made discs that were playable on my stand-alone dvd player, although all but one try made discs that were playable on my PC and laptop. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The files rip fine to my hard drive. Something is going wrong in the burning process.

Should I be burning an .iso? Or should I be burning the files from the video_ts files? I haven't had any luck with any of my burning programs, so there could be some step I'm missing, or a setting that's off kilter (everything on my programs is set at the default settings from installation).

Burn the VIDEO_TS folder with ImgBurn and then post the burn log.

They should make signing up to afterdawn more difficult. Something tells me if it were difficult enough, spammers wouldn't go through the trouble.

Goldfishy, have you not tried anydvd at all? As I said, I rarely have a problem using it. I hate to sound like a fanboy, but I have read that dvdfab is not the cleanest dvd tool. The last disc I had trouble with that I can remember was a LOST season disc. Oddly it was only ONE of the 6! Probably that infamous "bad press"!

    @joeyd1

Man you didn't offend me. I made a joke at your expense. I'm sorry you took it so bad. But if you hang around here long enough, somebody'll jump in your stuff again. You got to take this place for what it is. Mostly friends (regulars) trying to help the ones who need it and bantering between themselves (having never actually met) like you do with your good (face-to-face) friends. Someone is always the brunt of some mischief here. Just look around for endo and Jo (bryston), the NICE lady who translated for you. Not to mention the real maniacs garmoon, greensman, blivetNC, ddp, Auslander,LOCO, and varnull plus a whole slew of others. In fact this is what happens to you when you become an addict. :)

omegaman, members don't always see spammers banned after they post because lately i've been banning at least 3 wannabe spammers before they can post their spam. i find 1 spammer who has been banned then do an ip comparison & usually get 2+ potential spammers. i check to see if these potentials have posted which sometimes they do with spam then ban them.
