im trying to connect my computer and my xbox 360 to my router but to be honest i have no idea where to start when it comes to setting up a router.
i just bought this ethernet router on ebay and when it arrived the only thing in the box was the actual router. i have downloaded the manual and have followed all the steps but i still cant find a connection. i dont know what a WAN port is either

the manual says to enter the default ip address for the router in my explorer toolbar and then a security window comes up and asks for a username and a password. the manual then says to enter "admin" in username and to leave the password area blank. but when i do that ti keeps saying that i need a password.

i was hoping that someone here also has this type of router or knows if i need some kind of installation disc or if i am missing something that is stopping me from being able to install this router.

the wan port looks like the other ports on the router. what does it say on those ports? did you get a black power adapter that plugs the router to your wall plug to provide it with power? what i usually do when setting up a router for the 1st time is to disconnect the power & data cable that goes into the modem. run a straight thru ethernet cable from the modem to the router's wan port. connect another ethernet cable from 1 of the router's lan ports to the computer's lan port. connect the power cords from the wall plug to the modem & to the router. connect the data cable into the modem. startup pc & click on internet explorer & should be on the net.

i already have the power on and the lights are flashing. im not sure which cable you mean by the data cable on my modem. i have a tv cable (the cable that is screwed in), an ethernet and a power cable. i am going to try to restart everthing and see if that works.

thanks and i would still like any help if anyone can give it.

the data cable is your coax cable which also connects to your tv. didn't know if you were coax or dsl(telephone). press the reset button on the back of the router to reset back to factory defaults.

ok, so i have tried unplugging all my cables, turning off my computer, plugging all my cables back in and then turning the computer back on. i tried my internet explorer and im still getting the smae message of "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". i tried running a connection check on the internet explorer page and i got a message saying there might be a problem with my modem or router.

this is strange considering that my computer says that i have an internet connection (because an icon pops up in my toolbar when my internet is disconnected). im still very confused why this is happening. im not sure if i mentioned that my xbox 360 is also connected to my router.

disconnect the xbox for now. did you press the reset button on the back of the router? all the ethernet cables straight thru not cross overs?

i have found the reset button on the back of my router and pressed it and i have also unhooked my xbox, but now when i enter the default ip address for installation in my internet explorer toolbar, the logon screen doesnt even come up anymore.

i feel like i have tried everything i can think of and im still stuck. i thought connecting a router would be easy but this is really getting annoying. i have been trying to get this thing to work for about 6 hours now.

also ddp, what did you mean by straight through cables and not crossovers? i have one ethernet cord going from my modem to my router, and another one going from my router to my computer if that helps at all

straight thru cables are cables that have wires going from pin to pin as in pin 1 to pin 1 & pin 2 to pin 2. crossover cables have pin 1 goto pin 2 & pin 2 to pin 1. crossover cables are used when don't have a router but have 2 netcards in pc that another pc or game console connects to. look at the color of the wires & see if in same location on both ends as that is straight thru cable.
