no problem what so ever man, im sick of people disrespecting the great members of aD. Seems that all peeps are doing lately are putting others down, and I have a hard time bitting my tongue in that situation.

    Im with Tom.

If someone ever is taken into court on a letter like this. Look how easily you could get through this. Like Tom said, you could say your wireless network wasn't secured and bam anyone in your neighborhood could have done "the crime". Or just prove that you have OWN copy of the downloaded material.

I was also wondering on the topic of the letter regarding the "my name is earl" episode. Could they really take him/her to court? Its not any different than recording it to a DVR/VHS Tape/or through a TV Tuner and then burning/watching it.

Ditch the offending flick, dump the broken to many pieces CD in a trash can that isn't yours. Toss it out maybe with a fast food burger someplace...maybe melt the pup with a cigarette lighter. They can't say you have what you don't, and clean your system.

Play dumb, there is a lot of mislabled files out there, and indie files, and you can state your looking for an Independant work who's name you or your nephiew may have misspelled. The crappy typist defence.

STEER CLEAR of Bittorrent for at least two weeks and grab PG2 off Phoenix Labs FAST as TomMelee said, and grab IP PLATINUM too. Run both PG2 & IP PLATINUM when you hit the web again. Get CrapCleaner, SpyCleaner, and LavaSoft Spyware Removal Tool...all free.

When you hit Bittorrent again, burn everything you DL.

Once in a while, do a video check on your system. Check and see what videos are lurking in your system.

How the hell will you know weather you are using a public or private tracker?
Also, is using PG2 and HIP a sureshot way out of this?

Are you serious??? Its pretty simple to figure that out.....If yhee site requires you to sign up its private (torrentleech, black-cats, wild-bytes, oink, pisexy, feedthenet, torrent-damage......i can go on for days), and public sites are open to everybody.....

There is not a sure fire way to dodge the authorities, but using PG is a good way to help keep yourself safe.

HIP??? Do you mean Hide IP? That is a simple proxy, and will work in most cases. If an agency really wanted to figure you out, using a proxy wouldnt help squat. Also, a proxy will dramatically reduce your dl sppeds, making them pretty much worthless. Good for everyday browsing, crap when trying to dl.

    svtstang,
Sorry if my last post sounded rude. I was a bit freaked out after reading that letter.

Anyway, I wanted to ask whether PG2 completely blocks P2P networks, or just some specified IP adresses? If the latter, then which one does it block, or on what basis?

Also, by HIP, I meant Hide IP Platinum. If it dramatically reduces your download speeds, what's the point in using it? I mean, you don't really need a PROXY when you are browsing, which is not illegal. And while you need it while downloading(BIG files),the download will take forever. I am using bittorrent for 5 months, and I download atleast 300MB everyday. I have not got any email from my ISP as yet. Should I take a risk by not using HIP? If my ISP issues a warning, I can always start using it.
One more thing, what is the difference between Hiding the IP and using a proxy? Will using any ONE of these work? Does hiding the IP reduce download speeds too?

You did not sound rude in the least bit, sorry if I came off wrong. PG blocks all recognized "bad" IP's, including gv ip's and p2p baddies. It is a great way to protect yourself. Combine this with the fact that private trackers block potentially bad ip's, you are in business.

Well there are many uses of Hide IP platinum. I have it, though have never used it. You know there are a lot of weirdos in the world, ranging from peeps trying trying to overthrow the world to dirty pervs that look at kiddie porn. If you fall into any of these catagories (im not saying you do, just making a point), then a proxy would probably be worthwhile.

300 MB a day is nothing, but that still doesnt mean you are safe. On the other hand, I see many people that upload terabytes and have yet to get in trouble....which shows how inconsistant and random gettign caught is. I personally wouldnt use a proxy when dl'ing, but if you want the extra safety, by all means go ahead. Stick with PG and keep it updated, and you should be ok.

Hide IP is a proxy app, there is no difference. All proxy's reduce dl speed since you are being rerouted some place in a far off land (in my case beijing the one time I used it lol), so take that into consideration also.

I don't mind slow DL speeds with HIDE IP PLATINUM cuz safety is key. Sides which, when I'm snoozin' I'm not stressin. But then my modem's not THAT slow anyway, I still squeeze 2-300 k outa my cable modem when I'm routed to Korea or Japan...:/

Actually, that's not what I meant. HIP seems to have 2 options, 'Hide/Show IP' and 'Change Proxy'. I wanted to know whether using the 'Hide IP' option reduces your download speed.
And I really fail to understand how using a proxy reduces your download speed (i'm not saying that you are wrong, infact I used HIP and noticed the slow download speed). Not that I know a lot about this stuff, but it dosent really make sense to me. Does it have to do something where it routes you to (in my case, Hiroshima, Japan and the other time somewhere in Korea)?

    @ashwin

The hideIP option means it is putting you under a proxy which would greatley decrease your speed. The change proxy simply means that it would hide you under another proxy.

My question is - how does it decrease the speed. As far as my knowldge(guess, actually), the IP shouldn't have anything to do with the speed of the download. Can anyone explain this briefly in simple language?

Because as said before it is "routing to a different IP address". It has to pass through routers all the way to that IP address...And I'm pretty sure when you download or load a page it has to load through the proxy server

Exactly what he said. Just thik about it. Instead of pasing data locally, you are filtering through a sever half way across the world, which can only screw up your speeds.

But does a proxy actually work as far as keep you from being caught?
I understand that it does slow things down.
I run Ares and I have Proxyway, but I havn't really ever used it much.

I already answered that also. If you are just up to no good when you are browsing the net, you should be ok. If you are uploading terabytes and think a proxy is going to prevent you from being founf out, you are wrong. Proxies are good to use, but wont gurantee that you are safe from prying eyes

1)Stop typing in damn caps, or nobody will ever help you

2)What settings?? Just block all lists, and update.....pretty simple. Using PG, proxy and using private trackers, you are as safe as possible.

PG2 protects you when you aren't DL Torrents as well. I noticed a serious reduction in ads and spyware sense I left my PG2 going at full blast 24/7. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't run my CCleaner and my Spybot and my Lavasoft at least several times a week. It's unbelievable how much trash is about the Net nowadays...along with Torrents and goodies. Also, Newbie who got bit...grab yourself a Firefox Browser. I'm SURE Explorer's rigged SOMEHOW...but I may be paranoid...
