OK there have been a rash of these restore messages. Your post is the first with a clue as to what set it off. The restore may not even help. It has not helped with all the other users. Does the ipod work OK otherwise? That is how all the other ipods behave.

Apple may have permently screwed up your ipod by mistake in the security patch. A restore was probably supposed to fix the problem. Because it doesn't fix the problem and you can't connect to the computer to get an upgrade, the problem will be permenent. At least you have use of your ipod. 20% of the Zunes were distroyed with a bad version of their software. There are risks associated with updating. I still have a 4 yr old version of itunes on my old ipod. I don't have a few features but mine still connects using a standard USB driver which means the ipod can not pervent a computer connection like yours can. I will always be able to connect until the hardware fails. If worse come to worse I can reformat and install a back up of my ipod stored on a DVD. I stopped using itunes 3 years ago. My ipod is completely safe from all the nasty security routines they have now.

How did you do the copy? I assume you did not use Windows Explorer. That is the ONLY safe way to move stuff off your ipod. There are copy routines that will transfer data to and from your ipod. When Apple learns of these they add a security routine that punishes users the use that utility if they can. That is probably what happened to you. You have been punished for copyright infringement. You will get no help from Apple. They believe you got what you deserved.

I can't tell you what to do but I have not had itunes on any computer for 3 years.

Media Monkey although more complicated is a god send for a 4g nano. It does not do videos but there are several good apps that can do that. The flexibility of what you can do with a sync is amazing. It has an auto sync function that you can have a list of play lists. You can add an remove play lists and add/delete entries and it will sync. The paid for version will autoconvert tunes that will not play on your player.

That gives me a great idea! MM has their own forum. Go to the script forum and post your problem there. 10-20% of the readers are developers. MM has the ability to absorb VB script to alter the MM app. Some scripts effect the syncs. I think there is one that reverses the ratings. Normally the ratings come from the computer and are put on the mp3 player. This script takes the ratings and applies them from the mp3 player back to the PC.

The ones that play with the scripts are very familiar with the sync process. They have built hacks to hack through the Zune PC fire wall. There is a way to force an generic USB connection onto a Zune. That is what your problem is. Your ipod has firewalled itself through the Apple USB connection. The problem with the Zune is breaking through the fire wall is a one time deal. The next time you connect, it is up again. With the ipod, once you bring it down it and kill the switch, it ought to be permanent.

If you have success you need to post the solution or a link here. This problem now has more posts in the last 30 days than the most common on 'how do I put videos on my ipod?'. One person bought a new computer and apparently that set off this attack routine.
