I have a dual layer, dual format DVD burner by IO Magic (16X) that I just recently installed. I have backed-up a few of my movies since I have installed the drive using DVD+R media. A friend of mine gave me a few cheap DVD-R to use. Also I'm using DVD Shrink for the software. I had to slow down the burn speed in order to use the DVD-Rs. Now that I am done with the DVD-R discs a few things have happened that I don't know how to fix to start burning back to my DVD+R. 1)I can't change my burn speed back to 8X that I was burning before on the DVD+R and 2)My drive wants dual layer discs now. After I installed the drive I had no problem burning to a single layer disc and since I slowed down the speed I can't burn anymore. Does anybody have a suggestion as to how to try and fix this problem? I haven't tried re-installing the drivers yet for the burner.
It may be asking for dual layer disks because you have your DVD Shrink preferences set to DVD-9. In DVD Shrink's Edit menu select Preferences... and then click the Preferenecs tab if not already selected. Under "Target DVD size" dropdown menu select "Custom" and then type 4430 in the MB box. After clickup the "Backup" button in DVD Shrink, the "Backup DVD" dialog box appears. Click the "Burn Settings" tab to change the burn speed in the "Burn Speed" dropdown menu.
DVD Shrink was set on DVD-5, but I changed it to "Custom" and added 4430 in the box. But when I hit back-up and click on burn settings, the burn speeds are the same options as when I was burning to a 2x DVD-R (options are Maximun, 2.0x, and 2.4x). When I was burning to a DVD+R my burn speed options were 4.0x, 6.0x, and 8.0x. After encoding, DVD Shrink ejected the drive asking again for a dual layer disc.
I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to uninstall the drive through Device Manager, reboot twice, and see if that solves it. Is DMA enabled? Are the +R discs used after the -R discs the same as the +R discs used before? If not, that would point to firmware. Here's the I/O Magic firmware: http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html
Belle, are you burning with DVD Decrypter or Nero with DVD Shrink? Also i suppose it's possible that your drive isn't recognizing the media and forcing 2x burning. Have you tried any other brands of media? Try a RW disk and see what happens. I would experiment with RW disks until I figured out the problem and got a solution. Try having Shrink output an iso image file and then use DVD Decrypter to burn the image file created by DVD Shrink. That should help narrow down the search for answers.
Also iirc Nero will only display Max, 2.4x, and 2x as the burn speeds until you actually have blank media in the drive. As for the dual-layer request, I'm at a loss. I'm curious. What size is the file that your trying to burn?
