well ive burned over 150 dvds 125 ps2 games and about 20 cds. then when i tried to burn MI3 my drive went down. i have an lg burner gwa 4164b. it wasnt burning about a month ago then i upgraded the firmware, and it worked until MI3 came out(i cant flash my drive anymore for some reason). my sister has the same CPU as me and has never used her burner, should i just switch the dvd drives myself or let best buy do it?(or just get another one). how much do you think it will cost?i have never open the CPU up before but im pretty sure i can do it. is removing the drive pretty easy or is it hard, and i should let the pros do it? thanks

here is a guide on installing your own DVD drive:
    http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2201p166id113461.htm

keep in mind the prices described in the article is not correct as the article is old now! but the installation is the same!

first off your drive should not be done! it's still in it's infancy according to the amount of disks that you burned! I burned thousands of disks on my drive and it's still going strong! Unless you really messed up on your firmware update and screwed it completely! Before buying a new one......which is really cheap now.... you can get one for under 100.00 and you don't even have to install ..... get an external drive! I have both, internal and external, and I love them!

    your firmware should be:
    Sat Jun 03, 2006 8:36 am LG/HLDS GWA-4164B
    LG/HLDS GWA-4164B - E112, E113 (Dell OEM) / 1.05 (Fujitsu OEM)

what software are you using to burn your DVDs...... MI3 was easy to do..... used AnyDVD + CloneDVD ... flawless. no probs.

Stuff happens, my NEC 3520 only lasted for about 300 burns.

if that's an indication of NEC drives...... then I will keep farrrrrrrrr away from them! my poor old Philips 8631 is now over 1500 disks and my new BenQ 1655 is over 300 or so now.

That drive isn't even broke in yet!!!.

3500+ on my original benq 1620 and still holding strong!!!

IHoe: I see you still got your Philips-Rebadged Benq 1620- a burning away!!!!

TRICKPAT: Dvd shrink alone should rip MI3. Nothing special with the encryption being a paramount release.

    Try this first:

Go into device manager. Look for a yellow quotation mark.Tell us if you have any.

Now find the dvdrom/cd drives in that tree.

Now locate your LG burner, double click that drive. Click Driver tab/uninstall/and reboot. See if your drive will work. Sometimes these dvd drives get lost. Sometimes it acts like it burned up,and sometimes it turns into a cd-rw drive only. See if uninstalling the drivers and rebooting helps.

You mean the PC-Personal Computer? I've never opened up a cpu yet, LOL.

It's pretty easy to swap out drives, just gotta know about configuring the pins on the back of the drive,to match how it's connected on the IDE ribbon. You'll see a pic of MA/CS/and SL on the drive itself. Those are how your pins are jumpered. That's where the Master/Slave/and Cable Select come in.

Also, unplug the PC and modems, hit power button to get rid of any remaining energy. Then ground yourself on something metal before opening the tower. Static electicity is bad!!! I usually place my knee on the metal legs of my desk while working on my pcs. Usually a new drive or swap is less than 5 mins-depending how long it takes to get the side cover/s off.

I've got no links on how to do it,but found all that info googling for: How to install an Optical drive. If I come accross something,I'll edit it in.

Dell pcs are different,in case you and your sis have dells. They use cable select. Most pcs use Master and slave.

I don't know about that right now. Benq drives were sold to Lite-on,so they are getting very hard to find, even on Ebay.

I got my eye on a slightly used Plextor PX-716A for less than $80. I've always drooled over them, LOL. A good chance to compare my Q's to a Plexy!!!
