I have some sort of trojan/virus that is affecting the computer in a few ways:

    1) most of my desktop icons are gone, except my computer, recycle bin, My documents, and My network places

    2) In start-programs it says "(Empty)"

    3) I have 2 partitioned drives; C is where Windows files and programs are, and D is my other documents and such...When I go to the C folder is can see "WINDOWS", "Documents and Settings", and a few others, but when I click into them they shows 0 files. The C drive still has stuff on it becuase it is about 10GB large with still 3 GB free

    4) I cannot change any setting with Control Panel because it says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. ...may not have appropriate permission.."

4b) This also comes up when I click on some other things, but it says "Rundll32.exe: Windows cannot..."

    5) When I try "regedit" in RUN it says "windows cannot find regedit"

    6) Some of the items in Control Panel are missing

    7) If I try to open "admin tools" in control panel or AVG, or Firefox (and other programs from C)...nothing loads

    8) The computer also will not read anything on a jump drive. Says it's empty like it does for C drive

    9) all quick launch icons are gone

    more info:
I am using a separate computer to look up answers. Problem computer cannot access internet (cannot start firefox)

My wallpaper is still how I had it, I can access programs in my partitioned D drive just fine (unless they have anything in C)

I Have Win XP Home, SP2. I can't get any more info since when I right click on "My Computer" #4 above happens

I have tried looking up problems other places online, but whenever I found anyone with the same symptoms, their question was never answered. Also, my problem seems very specific with all the things happening, so it made it hard to search for an answer. Some people had one similar thing, but other things weren't an issue.

Also tried Rundll32 error repair tool, but my computer won't read the flash drive it is on

and tried scanning with PC Doctor, Malware, and Ewido, but nothing found

Thanks for any help you geniuses can give me!

Also, I believe my problem is with the registry (maybe?), but have no way to get into it to fix the problem, and I can't use a floppy, CD, flash drive, or internet to get a new file or program onto the computer, since it won't read any of them.

I am researching ideas on a separate machine, as the problem PC has no way to get online or ability to read external drive or discs to get anything on/off it.

sounds like most your hard drive has been wiped out.A reformat is probably your best chance to get it working.

Try booting puppy linux.. see what's still there. The usual cure is to use puppy to delete windoze related files.. root of C and the windoze directory, then reinstall leaving the filesystem intact (no format) .. OR.. you could try some of the recovery tools on UBCD .. google it and burn it.. the filesystem is corrupt in some way.

Think this is evidence of a badly used rootkit.. some script kiddie been messin in there.
