Installed 2 new opticals, Toshiba dvd rom, and NEC dvd rw. Replaced two others. NOW, can't get master and slave to work together on 1st ide. Either one will work alone as either master or slave, but not together, however, if i put one as master on 1st ide, and other as master on 2nd ide, then they are recognized, any thoughts?

I have seen similar problems but usually with the dvd rom and dvd burner being of the same manufacturer. For example if both the rom and burner were NEC then this could give you the exact problem you have if they are installed on the same IDE cable. The problem seems to happen at random on different systems. Maybe the MB that causes the conflict. However installing the drives each on a different IDE cable usually corrects the conflict. There is a chance that both your drives are manufactured by the same company and giving you the conflict. Its just a guess but looks that way because they work on the different IDE cables. Do some research and see who actually made both drives. My guess is they might both be NEC's.
