Hi, all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I recently purchased a Philips DVP642/37. I'm currently researching codecs, software, and processes for converting video files to play on the DVP642, but have not found the information I seek.

I'm here to ask video experts the following:

    1. What codecs are best for ensuring high quality and reliable playback on the DVP642? Of those codecs, which are freeware? (I've noted some version of XviD will play just fine while others won't.)
    2. What programs (preferably freeware; I'm a poor college student) should I use to convert the files to the codec referenced in question #1?
    3. Can you point me to any step-by-step guides for converting these files using the given codec and programs?

I admit I'm a n00b to this. Any and all help is much appreciated.
