I am trying to fix an old pc of mine that for some reason will not access the internet via IE (or mozilla, google chrome etc). The strange thing is i have started a P2P program and it will search for audio tracks(so it can pick up the internet.I am connected via a LAN cable and have virgin(which is working.I have a IE problem somehow.I have tried to go to control panel-internet options ,but from here i cannot access the options. If i click the icon ,the IE options icon just flashes but does not open up. I there anyway i can reload this IE and options so i can access this from the control panel page. I have also treid to update AVG ,it can find the updates but it will not download them.Same with malware bytes will not update etc as it cannot access the internet. Any ideas.????
what i am thinking it is a DNS resolve problem. **DNS looks up, say, microsoft.com and the DNS server will tell your computer that the numerical adress, which is what a computer uses, is 207.46.170.123 .** i felt the explanation was neccessary for your understanding. This list will tell you some DNS Server addresses. you should have it set to obtain automatically, but if you want to try you can add a server adress or two from the list. to do this, go to network options in network neighborhood or network and sharing center. open the properties of your network adapter and check out the tcp ip v4 properties. this setting can be reversed. hope it helps. BTW, IE options is Only for IE not mozilla or chrome, i believe.
I ve checked the IP out on the adaptor settings and all are set to automatic same as another xp computer i have in the household. My dilemma is as all the IE software and settings have been wiped, although the icon is still present in control panel-settings,is how do i reload all the software for the internet explorer.?????Remember i cannot access the internet for downloading.I tried rebooting in safe mode with networking, but again as the pc has no explorer settings this did not work. So i probably need the original disk for windows XP and maybe do a repair????trouble is the disk i have is probably not the one for this pc??? I did years ago download some files from somewhere to repair a IE but its over 5 years ago and i cannot remember where i got these from.Once i did this i just transfered them onto the other PC. If i could get the files for IE and reload this ,i think this might possibly work, but where to get it from is another story. Thanks Mrslicker for the reply.
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix There should be some options in that program to reinstall/reset all settings in IE. Its been some time since i have had to use it. Read the wiki.
