    Hi rigoler
    Welcome to aD
Yes you probably do need an update - firmware. It's an older drive (8x max) & the firmware you have is from 2004 so 16x media may give this drive a problem.
Looks like the latest is 2.18. Did this drive come w/ the pc if so who is the manufacturer. Or did you buy the drive directly?

Probably not playing into the problem but best to have all drives in DMA mode. Here's a guide to turn it back on.

    hey rigoler,
from my personal experience - the fact that your machine is new doesnt necessarily mean that you have the latest firmware installed. Some manufacturers update their firmware up to eight - nine times a year. I have come across this problem withoutdated firmware on a new machine, prduction unit several times so tome the advise sounds rather reasonable (i must admit i didnot follow closely your message- just read it breefly andr ead the answer). So you may want to see if the firmware upgrade thing does works the treat.

You can try version 2.18 from here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837

Or try Gateway for a firmware update on this drive - couldn't find one for them in a quick search.

Your drive will more than likely need a firmware update to burn 16x media.

Another option is trying to find 8x media - in some areas that is getting harder and harder to do in store. Reputable sites online have good deals on 8x media like Taiyo Yuden.
