Heya, I've suddenly been getting this error trying to burn on some RiData Mini DVD-Rs. My drive has the latest firmware and I've made sure DMA is on (since I guess Nero won't report it correctly with Nvidia drivers?). What's weird is two weeks ago I used the first two discs from my spindle worked just fine and previous to that, I've burned tons of these dvds before. Here's the log:

    Hi johnakain
Yes you're correct about Nero not showing DMA correctly w/ nvidia.
If it's showing DMA on in device manager you good there.

Usually illegal disc is due the media and/or firmware not being up to date. But you're using good media and firmware is up to date.
Never burned any mini dvd's but logic would hold the same.

Anything change pc wise since you were last able to burn?

If you haven't very recently run a disc defrag, registry cleaner like the free ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options. Run a virus and spyware scan too.
May or may not help but good to do on a regular basis.

Try another burning program - you can burn those iso's w/ ImgBurn.

Give that a go and let us know.

    edit: fix link

    Hi johnakain ,

I can see that your DMA for your Lite on is turned off, I believe it needs to be on, heres a link that may help, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

It also appears that your burner doesnt like your discs, are they memorex. I use only Verbatim.

Edit: To add, that shows my inexperience.

The only thing that I changed was my floppy drive that died.

I run my antivirus and malware/spyware cleaners on a regular basis. I also ran ccleaner but that didn't seem to help.

Next thing I would do is rule out the dvd's.

Try another brand. For mini ones try Verbatims.

Minis only ones giving your burn failures - single layer dvds burn okay?

    Hi wndrbygav
    Here's a few suggestions.

    Nero Version: 6.6.1.4
Take Nero down a notch. Uninstall (write down the serial # 1st) - run the clean tool and install verion 6.6.0.18.
    Package 1
    Package 2 (recode, vision)

    Recorder: <Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16>Version: BWSB
Burner can use a firmware update. The latest is BWSE

    File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS & File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS'
Nero & Roxio don't play well esp when you have Nero InCD installed too.
If you're not using InCD uninstall it and the InCD Clean Tool.
Still failing then uninstall Roxio and run the Zap Tool.

    Keep us posted!

    Not a problem wndrbygav
You're using good discs - Verbatim but even with the firmware update didn't help.
There have been no firmware updates to this drive since 8/04 - BWSE was the last one. So it's looking like 16x -R discs (maybe even 16+R)
may not do well with this drive.
Since it will burn 16x max to +R only you may be better off trying some +R Verbatims. For -R try and get 8x media.

You can also give ImgBurn a shot. Good free burner. You can use the write mode to burn iso's or use the build mode to burn other file types.

yeah i was just looking at the dvds that worked for me before and they were Memorex DVD-R 8x. ImgBurn had an error too. its not really that big of a deal its just someone got a 50 pack of these Verbatims like a year ago and i just now started to use them and was hoping i wouldnt have to waste them. since there hasnt been any updates to my firmware lately do you think that means there wont be anymore updates? anyways, thanks again for your time. it was a big help.

    Not a problem wndrbygav

Yeah I don't think Memerox will have any more firmware updates for this drive.
But this drive is an oem LiteOn 1633S so you try using the patched LiteOn 1633 firmware BSOY. That was last updated about 6 mos ago.
    Here's a link.

Might want to give that a go. Since there is newer media that this drive probably can't support I'd try that and/or replace the drive with a newer. Good ones are pretty cheap now.

It worked! haha. i installed the patched BSOY from Lite-On and it fixed it. I shall spread your knowledge. Thank you very much for all your help. I was just accepting the fact the all 50 of those Verbatims were useless. Thanks again! :)

jhonakain, someone else noticed it but i dont think you caught the response, your drive is listed as having DMA off.

    You're welcome :)
Glad the patched firmware did the trick (almost forget some Memorex's are made by LiteOn).

    Happy Burning!

at the time it seemed that no one had offered the help they needed so i figured i would give them a push in the right direction, i am pretty sure they are smart enough to do a search of the forums to find out how to turn them back on

I think you are wrong in assuming this as this is The reason they seek our assistance

If you know something [bold]then DONT keep it a secret and assume others do...solve it for them...thats' what the majority here at AD do.[/bold]

get off your high horse gwendolin, you are not a god to be worshiped. you didnt even properly diagnose my issue and that wouldnt even have been an issue if you had told me to TRY this or that and see if its the problem. No, you had to TELL me what my problem was in a rude manner and were completely WRONG. get over yourself.

This proves you know nothing. He stated earlier that as he has Nvidia drivers that Nero does not correctly show up whether DMA is on or off. In this instance, he has said it is on, yet Nero won't show it as they are Nvidia drives.

Please don't come around here with a "know it all" attitude, when really you have no knowledge of any of this. Also, you have the nerve to go on and insult one of our most knowledgeable members in this area, ie Nero, for the second time now; I beleive.

I think you should "get over yourself". Btw, I've reported you, and this time, I don't think we'll be seeing you with a temp ban under your name.
