    Well I cant seem to get anything to work right. Heres the story-

    Long time ago (year, maybe a little more) used this drive to back up my dvds. Never had a problem with it. The drive is probably 2 and a half years old now but isnt used very often. About a year ago i started using it to back up dvds. Worked fine. I had Fujifilm dvds -R, which are horrible im aware, but they worked. Spindle ran out so i went to best buy and bought some more fujifilm. They didnt work. I kept getting illegal disc, etc etc. Tried Dvdshrink/nero as well as imgburn- neither worked.

    So i started using memorex DVD+Rs which i had available. They gave me an illegal disc error on nero and worked on img burn, so i continued. Problem was they didnt like dvd players so i had to switch. I bought some verbatim -Rs because everyone on every "help i cant burn dvds" forum ive been on raves about them. So I thought id try. I pop one in and I get "illegal disc" with nero and "unsupported media" with imgburn. So I thought id post the nero log first.

    If anyone can take a look at this and give me any hints that would be great. Theres no firmware for my burner so thats not it, and it did work with the memorexs so Its not totally fried. I really am out of ideas here- Thanks guys.

    Not sure which version of Nero you are running, believe it to be 6.3 something, upgrade to this version, 6.6.0.18 here,
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/?539 they say it is the best of the version 6 series.
    Your firmware is uptodate, my first thought, but you are okay,
    InCD doesn't play well with Nero Burning, you may want to reinstall Nero and leave out InCD.
    DMA is not enabled in these two drives,
    You have plenty of memory available.
    Disk seems to be recognized,
    All I can find is the InCD issue, unless one of the more educated senior members can find something else, (Hint Binkie or Gwen..)
    I hope that this helps.

    @blivetNC - lol - you are too kind :)
    Good work btw!!

    @mog108
    In addition to blivetNC good advice.

    Your drive's max speed on -R is 8x and your using 16x media.
    That may be part of the problem. I couldn't find the firmware's media codes right off. But I'm thinking you drive would do better w/ 16x if it was +R. For -r 8x rated media may be better for your drive.

    The 2 drives w/ dma off you should be ok on - they look like virtual drives.

    I would also update Nero to this version 6.6.0.18. Here's some links:
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2 (recode & vision)
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

    Well I uninstalled InCD.. i didnt do a full uninstall, i dont THINK it should matter but if someone things InCD will leave residue after a removal, let me know and ill completely uninstall and reinstall nero (i really dont want to have to though.. haha)

    I also upgraded to the new version you both gave and got the same error. Im posting the updated log now and then I will try to change the write speed. If that works, Ill repost. But Im assuming it wont, so if theres nothing more on this thread- it didnt work. haha Thanks for your help so far, dont give up on me! =)

    Hey ryan
    Forgot to add to edit your serial out of the post - begins w/ 1A (it's in both logs)
    You can run the clean tool for InCD too - here's a link:
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/InCD_CleanTool.html

    Your memorex drive is actually an oem LiteOn 1633S. You could try flashing to that firmware to see if it helps w/ the 16x -R Verbs.
    But I'm not the best in crossflashing - it may just be a simple flash as usual. Here's a link - the latest is BSOY:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1934

    Otherwsie look for the same brand or made in Japan Fuji. Sony or mexell 8x media.

    Your memorex drive firmware is up to date.
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1925
    BWSE is the latest, and that is what you have.

    Your version of Nero is the one i would use if i were staying with 6x. Thats the 6.6.0.18 that binkie7 said to update.
    So, lets break it down.
    Your Nero is correct,
    Your Firmware is up to date,
    The only thing left is media or a drive error. Nero didnt report a drive error other than "not ready". I would suggest trying different media, trying to stick with Verbatims or Taiyo Yuden as the manufacturer. Now if you got fujis that were made in taiwan, you didnt get Tys. Also try different formats like + or - R. The last log says you removed IN CD, and as you said, you updated, Nero, that only leaves Media, or as a very distant second, the drive. Illegal disc errors usually are out of date firmware, or media as the main culprets. Media is cheap to try if you stick with small number of test dvds, on your purchase.
    Nothing else seemed to stand out on that last log. Keep posting them as they fail, and maybe we will pin it down. I still suspect Media.. I know, you have heard it before, but dont dismiss it completly just yet. Usually Verbs do the trick, but not for every system out there.
    Those name brands binkie7 recommended should be Made in Japan on the spindle packaging to get Taiyo Yuden as the manufacture (just like binkie7 said). :)
    We should be able to get you going with 6x Nero, but it might take updating to Nero 7, if you try more media and they all come back "illegal disc". But save that as a last resort.

    Sorry, thats all i can think of right now. Your in good hands with the ones who have been helping you. Im not as concerned about not visiting the forum as much, because the nero crew is great.

    Ok i was having the same problem and it was that i was trying to use 16x discs when my max burn speed was 8x. It was kinda weird since the discs were supposed to be 1-16x but w/e. try getting some 8x discs, thats what worked for me.

    @Xevlys
    That's where firmware comes into play - your drive needs the media code to fully recognize and have the correct write strategy for the media you are using. Sometimes even having the latest one may not have the media code for the brand you're using.
    Thanks for posting what worked for you!!

    @mog108
    Well no loss on the crossflash to the LiteOn. I can give you another link but there is no guarantee this will work either. Plus crossflashing can be a little riskier.
    Best bet if using -R pick up 8x like Xevlys said worked for them & I adv. above. Use the brands we have posted.
    Were you previous discs that worked rated 8x?

    Keep us posted on your outcome!! Good,bad or otherwise.

    @maxburn
    I think you need to come and help more!!! We miss that great sense of humor ;)

    Well So far this is my media selection

    Fujifilm 8x -R : Worked
    Sony 8x +R : Worked (Skips on DVD player)
    Memorex 8x +R : Worked (Skips on DVD player)
    Fujifilm 16x -R : Did Not Work
    Verbatim 16x -R : Did Not Work

    So judging from what Im hearing and actually paying attention to the maximum write speed of the DVD... it looks like my 16x LiteOn doesnt like 16x media. Interesting. That may just be the problem.

    When I get around to it I'll get out and get another pack of 8xs and see how that works out.

    I was under the impression, at least from personal experience, that +R media doesnt like stand alone dvd players as well as -R media. Is that valid or am I just running a string of bad luck? If thats not the case, what is the primary difference between those two?

    Your drives max speed on -R media is 8x so I'm thinking they haven't updated the media codes for it on -r 16x. (last update was 6/2005)

    +R media can be booktyped to make it almost universally compatible. Your drive supports 16x with +R.
    Since it's a oem LiteOn you should be able to use LiteOn booktype utility.
    http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=152
    Or before you burn put a blank in the drive & go to Nero ToolKit>CD/DVD speed>extra>bitsetting and change to DVD Rom there. You will probably have to do this each time (same w/ the utility). Nero doesn't seem to like the automatic setting for LiteOn manufactured drives.
    Players can also be picky - so try a lower speed w/ the +R. I would also check those +R that skipped in the dvd player in the pc and see if there are any problems there.
    Keep us posted!

    well I bought some sony dvd -R 8xs and popped one in, used nero to burn my disc image and rather than give me fits it just started burning- currently 5% done. So I think 16x DVDs are my problem, thanks to everyone for the help- Ive been trying to figure this thing out for much too long- haha

    Hopefully it comes out and plays just fine- if not- hey i guess we'll continue this discussion... haha but I think itll work alright- thanks again guys (and girls)
