Hi, I don't really know much about these sort of things so I was wondering if somebody here could help me. The problem: Burning data dvds with TDK DVD+R 8x works fine but when I try to burn with TDK DVD+R 16x I get a message saying 'illegal disk'. I've checked my firmware and it seems to be up to date.. This tells me that your firmware is too old to recognize the new media. I couldn't find your exact drive on RPC1, but I assume that it is in the same family as the 200i/e but maybe an OEM drive. If this is the case there hasn't been support for this drive since 2004. Looks like HP has abandoned the drive and is trying to force you to buy a new drive. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=309 You may only be able to burn the 8X media unless you upgrade to a new drive. TDK are not a recommended brand, but if you have success with them try to find some old 8X discs and stick with it. You may also want to upgrade to version 6.6.0.18, but don't go past it as advanced versions are full of bugs. DL both packages from here: http://my.afterdawn.com/locoeng/blog_entry.cfm/280 This should be a three line paragraph that includes the MID of your discs....see above statements. This is Roxio's driver that is known to create conflicts when burning with Nero. I would suggest removing it in it's entirety from your system via this clean tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
Just as a reference, the CDRALW2K.sys can be installed unknowingly if you have the latest Winamp. http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=199851
I had the same problem. It turned out that even though my firware was the latest version it still did not support the 16x discs. the 16x gave illegal disc error, but the 8x worked fine. i suggest you stick with the 8x. thats just my experience
I upgraded to version 6.6.0.18 and used Roxio zap, but now when I try to burn the 16x DVD+R I get the message 'Could not perform end of Disc-at-once'. Does that mean anything? Burning 8x still works fine. Thanks, I've removed the Roxio thing now. Does 'Could not perform end of Disc-at-once' mean anything?
