    Hi Guys

Wonder if anyone can help me - Going through mass clean up of my pc recently burning movies to DVD, bought a load of Phillips DVD-R's to burn all films to DVD format

I'm converting the files using XVIDtoDVD or the files were simply downloaded as the VIDEO_TS folder

Tried after conversion through XVIDtoDVD to then burn to Disk and it tells me illegal disk then some code (looked up on google, no ref to the code or XVIDtoDVD then tried through Nero using VIDEO_TS drag and drop option in Nero and got same thing 'illegal Disk' - I then try DVD+R and hey presto it works. Now i know lots will say 'well just use DVD+R's but i'm hoping someone can shed come light on why i cant copy to DVD-R (bearing in mind i bought 100 of the Blighters!!

My PC is a: - Dell Dimension 5000
    Microsoft windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz
    1.00 GB RAM

Now i'm hoping its something thats been staring me in the fae all along!! ive seen some threads about firmware upgrades but not to up to date with this just wondered if anyone could shed some light on why the disks wont burn - Also the films are no way near the capacity of a DVD and they are Commercial films not home-made films etc

    Hi there :)

Your Nero is out of date. Update with these packs

    Pack 1
    Pack 2

Firmware is out of date. Get the latest, 104C, here.

Burning too slow. Burn @ 4-8x speed.

Your drive doesn't like the media, so if after the firmware update and everything else listed, then buy new disks; preferably Verbatim.

    Get back to us.

    Hi Guys

Many thanks for the reply you sent along with the links to the updates, i installed all on my PC and hey presto been burning DVD-R's ever since so thanks again that was a real life saver

What i also need to ask is, My brother has a Dell Dimension 3100 with a DVD + R NEC 3530A Re-Writer and when attempts exactly the same thing he gets 'illegal disk' when burning movies onto DVD-R.

Now obviously i am thinking along the same lines as your reply install both updates for Nero thats not a problem and when looking on the Dell website and other Firmware websites for Firmware relating to this Drive (his being a DVD+R Drive and mine being a DVD+-R Drive) cant see any links to any different firmware and its its looking like he needs to upgrade with the same firmware as above the 104C that you pointed me too

Can you shed any light on whether this is true cos as you can imagine i dont want to be incurring any costs for mucking up his DVD re-Writer - he hasnt and would know how to upgrade firmware so i'm 100% sure its as it was when he bought it

    Hope you can help

    Regards
    Richard

Also regarding the last update he has been burning DVD-R's prior to this - for some reason he bought a spindle of 50 Phillips DVDs today and when copying films to DVD is getting the error

    Cheers
    Richard

Glad you are all sorted. :)

As for your brother, you'll be fine updating using the 104C update, as there are no differential versions, just the one. Use the link provided as before, and update in the same way.

Edit: Your next issue should be fixed with the firmware update. If not, get back to us. However, Phillips media is not top notch at all, so if he has problems after the update, I reccomend getting a different brand, such as Verbatim.
