I wanted to let you all know that you have all been a great help to me. And I defefinantly want to let anyone who is experiencing troubles all of a sudden after a year or so with the ability to read or finalize discs on your unit, PLEASE OPEN YOUR UNIT UP AND CLEAN THE LASER LENS. I just did it and it is amazing what adifference it made.
Remember this unit has a fan on the back and it is sucking in every bit of cooking oils and perfumes and polution that is in your houses air. I had actually had a simular reoccuring problem on my JVC CD Bunner / CD Changer for my home theatre. It has these big old vents on the backside of the chasis and every six months to a year I open it up and do the lenses so it will stop skipping. Also remember that there appears to be a certainly level of fragility to the info on the hard drive. Regularly defragment your hard drive, also wiping or clearing the drive ever so often is a good thing to do as well. So bigtime advise would be to not keep things that you will be wanting to archive on the drive too long, make the time to burn discs and get them off of the drive as soon as possible. I have seen times when the power went out or surged when data was curupted & lost. I'm talking things that I had watched before and then after the thunderstorm was over the data had left too. In closing, use rubbing or denatured alcohol to clean the lens and 100% cotten swabs. I also found that by using a magnifing glass and a lot of bright good light I could see what I was doing better. Just untape the brassy looking straps from the circuit board and unscrew the cover on the DVD Writer. You'll be able to enjoy your machine as you have not been able to do in a while. Happy viewing.
