I have tried to convert avi files and burn them to dvd but I don't understand really how to burn them after converting them. I am wasting too many dvds, I am going to try a rewritable dvd next time. Can anyone explain the steps in converting avi to dvd and burning them so that when the dvd is inserted in the player it can play the movie?

ConvertXtoDVD by VSO not only converts AVI files to DVD format, it also burns the files to DVD for you. Nero Vision in the Nero suite also converts to DVD compliant format. Then you simply burn the converted files with Express or the Burning ROM. Good idea working with the RW till you get the technique down.
