My I/O Magic finally gave out and I am going to buy a Plextor 740a tomorrow for $55. That is unless any of you can talk me out of it. How about it, does anyone have any comments? Something else for the price better? Let me know. Thanks.

you do know that the Plextor 740a is in fact a rebadged Benq dw-1640 right? which by the way is an EXCELLENT drive~ :) but, hey for $55, that's less than what newegg has it for after rebate, so i would give it a go~!!

it's very difficult to find a Benq 1640 nowadays as they no longer make them...but, hey, it's the same internals with a PLEXTOR badge...why not? hehe

    good luck

dbuchanan - I have that same drive and I absolutely love it! It's very quiet, I haven't had a single coaster yet and it can booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM. If you use good media and burn at 4x, you'll be very happy with it.

I would just get a BenQ, but I can't find one. Newegg was the price I was refering to in the above post. Maybe it was $59 after rebate, I can't remember. Does anyone Know when the BenQ Lightscribe model is going to be in stores? If I didn't have to wait too long for that one I may get one of those.

which Benq lightscribe model are you referring to?

the Benq dw1625 is already available and it is lightscribe drive...not on newegg currently, but, it's out there~ :) hehe

http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=3359&cata=3&s_cata=28 not avail. as of today, but, it will be, so they claim...

    http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=4345&cata=3&s_cata=28

    OR

are you referring to the NEWEST of lightscribe Benq models, meaning the DW1655? i have only seen the newest Benq Lightscribe in very few online retailers in the U.S...shop4tech being one of them, found here:

    http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=4728&cata=3&s_cata=28

    or retail, found here:

    http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=4729&cata=3&s_cata=28

i'm waiting for the Benq dw1650 myself, i don't need the lightscribe technology as i personally have no interest in it at this time...but, i want to see EXACTLY what all the commotion about the newest Benq dw1650 is all about for myself~!

i'm going to buy one within the first week it's readily available and be the guinea pig here in the U.S.~ :) if you see the benq dw1650 here in the U.S., please let me know...

hope that answers your benq lightscribe question...you got 2 choices to choose from that i linked you above...i really don't know the quality of the lightscribe drives, only because i have no PERSONAL experience with them and i probably never will~ :)
