When I run the HP set up software to set up the wireless printing, I am asked if the printer is connected to my computer to a USB cable (which it is). When I choose the option that says the printer is connected to the computer through USB cable, the printer is not found and my only option is to go to the previous screen and say again that the printer is connected to the computer through a USB cable. This just results in while long cycle, where the printer is never recognized as being connected to the computer.

When you install the printer make sure it is turned on. Also do not plug the printer into the usb port until the HP setup wizard asks you to.

You have also mentioned that you want to do a wireless installation, for that installation you do not plug the printer into the usb port.

except for 1st time install, has to be plugged into usb port when setting up for wireless.

Windows detects the hardware immediately as soon as I plug the printer in. I think I'm going to try uninstall everything and start over fresh as far as the printer is concerned. But this time I'm going to follow the advice given above and make sure that I do not plug the printer into the USB port until I am prompted to do so.

If I remember correctly the software does not prompt me to do anything immediately it has to be initiated by the user.

usually about half way thru installation, it will ask you to turn printer on & connect usb cable.
