Hey guys, this is my first post to this section on after dawn. As much as I hate to sound stupid, I'm afraid when it comes to PC hardware, I'm just that. I realize these questions may be trivial to you guys, but I want you to know I really appreciate the help. I hate stupid sales associates that have no idea what they are talking about, and will tell you whatever you want to hear, if they can even come up with an answer. Anyway here goes. I work nights, so when I'm off, there isnt much to do so I was thinking about buying a game or two to occupy my time. One game was Guild Wars (feel free to respond with comments about that too if u wish) However, my video card (i hope thats what you call it) doesnt seem to meet the specifications required. I'm really not in the market for a new computer yet, so I was hoping I could just replace the card and go another year or so before purchasing a new system. However, this is difficult to do when you know nothing about how video cards work, or what your motherboard will accept. Here is what the game requires: Minimum System Specs: ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX Series Video Card with 32MB of VRAM Recommended System Specs: ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series Video Card with 64MB of VRAM With that said,..my computer is a Sony Vaio Model: PCV-RX671. Its a P4 2.0, but thats all I know about it. If you guys could tell me what card would work with my board, and the game, I would really appreciate it. If anyone finds that this computer was built with a card that should work, I would like to know that as well, but I dont think thats the case. I dont need anything really fancy, as obviously the card that it came with has been working fine for my needs till now, and will most likely only be used for this game and then a new computer purchased in a year or less. Again, Thank you very much
I couldnt find any information on the web about the speficications of the motherboard, but on ebay, I did find an auction for a board that states its from the same model of vaio that I have. I dont know for sure if this is the same one I have or not, or if the one listed here is the original from the computer, but here is what it said the specs were Motherboard Specs : MOTHERBOARD MODEL: Asus P4B266-LM CPU SUPPORT: Socket 478 for FC-PGA2 Pentium 4 (Willamette/Northwood) 1.4GHz to 2.4GHz+ FSB: Adjustable FSB up to 800 MHz. Onboard ATA-100 Memory: 2 PC2100 slots 3xPCI, 1xAGP (AGP 4x) Onboard AC '97 audio 2xUSB, 1xIEEE1394, hookup for addition USB on front of case Realtek RTL8100 100/10Mbps Ethernet LAN Controller Thanks!
Here is someone running the same PC as you with a 6600GT 128MB card, this is more than enough to do what you want and will allow plenty of other games to be played. Maybe also look at how much memory you have, I would lok for at least 1GB for gaming. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/7961032962/m/1201044393/r/5301044393
I have 512 now, but I would like to upgrade to 1. My memory now is DDR 2100, will this motherboard support faster memory, or do I need to start a different thread? Thanks
I don't think your get faster than 2100 running on that PC. Hopefully you were supplied with a single 512 stick, otherwise your looking at selling your 2x256 sticks and getting more memory as you only have 2 slots. Games should still run okay with 512 but extra memory will help no end.
I did some price checking on the video card you mentioned. It looks like its a great card, but a little expensive if I am only going to use it for 8-12 months??? Is there a good quality card that will fit the needs of the newer games, including Guild Wars, and run a little bit cheaper (60-75) in price? Thanks again for all the help
Always lookin out for a fellow gamer. Here's a card that will work for you. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130262 eVGA is very reliable. It is 98 bucks tho, but it is a perfect fit since you have a 4x AGP slot.
I have decided on a card thanks to the help from you guys, but i didnt know if i should get a PCI or an AGP ? is there an easy way to tell? Thanks guys by the way i decided on a Geforce (OC) FX 5500 256 ($119.00) shipped. Feel free to yell at me if thats not good
Its a so so card. But I seen them brand new in the box sealed over at ebay for like 55.00 buy it now. So ya getting ripped. :>
