It'll take a couple mins to load a dvd. But the main problem is that when I put in a blank DVD-R, it just spins and it keeps programs from running. For example, I'm trying to burn a movie from my hard drive (which I've done a thousand times!) and ImgBurn keeps spitting it out. Then I tried a couple other burning software and they either won't load or they go "not responding" BUT if I take the DVD out, the software works without delay. But as soon as I load up the DVD my computer freezes. I just recovered the computer due to a virus so everything should be running smoothly. Please help. What could be the problem? Then I tried a couple things and Imgburn worked til about 47% done and I got an i/o error and here's the log:

do a clean re-install of you're burning programs imgburn etc. use better media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim burning at 6x to 8x max . make sure you have the most up to date firmware for you're drive/burner

I uninstalled and reinstalled imgburn a couple times, I even installed several different versions and I still get the same result. I can't really afford Verbatim media. I usually buy Sony, TDK, Maxell and I've never had a problem before.

I will try the software you recommended and see if that works. How do I check the firmware??? Sorry.. I'm so computer stupid.

thanx, i reformatted the computer (again) to see if the driver would work but no luck. it'll read a CD but if i put in a dvd or blank dvd disc it freezes and it says "no medium present". could it be that its broken?? i looked into replacing it and found an HP internal burner at bestbuy for $50. Should i just replace the darn thing? my computer is only 2yrs old but i probably burned close to 50-70 maybe 100! dvds in the past few months... after i learned how easy it was. i think i killed it.

is this the make--> HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H21L HP Pavilion
imgburn says my firmware is L702

50 seems high for a dvd burner. I watch the sales adds and can usually find one for 10 to 20 less. Not a big difference, but hey times are tight.
Ive used a number of drives to death over the years. At first I started having issues with discs in that they wouldnt play in some of my dvd players. Eventually the drives started producing discs that did not work at all. The last drive I purchased was an LG and it has lasted longer than many and is still going.
A bit of tragic comedy: Ive had two drives where the discs exploded in the drives. Another time I was not looking and placed a disc on top of a disc that was already in the drive. It ruined the drive when I tried to write to the stack of two discs.

This is never ending. I tried to play a regular CD and it worked. After reformatting, I had to install the printer's software... no problem. Here's where it gets weird. I started DVDShrink and I put in a DVD and it took alittle longer for the DVD to play but I was able to back up the DVD. When I started Imgburn to burn it.. NOTHING! It still says "device not present" and the whole computer freezes! I give up. I can't really afford a new DVD writer, I read online where you can clean the lense with rubbing alcohol. I'm not into opening up this computer and messing with the insides. Is it broken, should I repalce it, clean it, nuke it.. I'm so fustrated.

you can get a disc cleaner at wal-mart etc for 6 or 7 dollars. new drives on newegg are 20 to 30 dollars for a good one don't spend 50 at best buys
