This is only for those of you who have not experienced the problems with sub-standard DVD-R/+R. I had burned probably 500 + DVD's before I needed to restore my computer for virus problems. After I restored it, I had bought some media that I had previously used,Maxell I believe, and went to burn some DVD's and started to get coasters left and right. Since I had used this brand before I naturally assumed it was a software issue. Notta. Then I thought it may be a firmware issue. Notta. So then I though it may be a media issue and went and bought some Fugi DVD's . Some of these worked and some did not. I finally ordered some Ridata from Meritline.com, and changed my burn rate to 4X. I have had no problems since. Even though the burn rate is slower than what it was before,6.2X approx. , I still have my movie burned with Decrypter in about 13 minutes which was the same as before. I have had excellent success with Ridata and recomend it to everyone. Having media fail is a much bigger pain in the ass than I want to experience anymore. I was told it was a media issue early on but I am thick headed. Oh well...Live an Burn ;^)
Maxell has recently changed the company that makes it media so be carefull using it. make sure its MIJ Ritek is good media yes BUT Taiyo Yuden and Verbatium is better and buring at 4X is a good idea
I too learned of Maxell's recent quality demise the hard way. At one point in time, all of the Maxells that I was buying were RICOH and performed flawlessly. I recently ran out of discs before my newest shipment of Ridata arrived and dropped by to grab some Maxells to hold me over and most were coasters. Not impressed at all. Did notice that AllMediaOutlet has Ricoh branded discs available. Thought about picking up a batch to see how they work out.
I agree, media is one of the most important factors in a good backup. I wouldn't personally recommend RIADATA, instead I'd go top tier with Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims. These will scan out better almost always. As for the Maxells(MIJ), I had nothing but problems with them 6000 PIF's, 1000 PIF's after f/w upgrade, only to find out my Sony burner doesn't support them. dwalda-Check ot the forum on Media, there is a lot of useful info over there. Welcome and good luck burning!
@ dwalda99 hiyou can't go far wrong with Ritek Corp.GO5 made in taiwan Ridata being there own brand use them all the time, never a problem. as said above a nice slow burn 4x or slower ensures a successful burn every time. @akyllonen i did a back to back scan of a verb and one of my ritek's last week i couldn't tell the difference (they where that close) can't comment on TY's having never had one to burn.but aabbccdd...creaky....and kivory say there top dog so they can't be bad
would appreciate you guys having a look thru this thread.. - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/216438
After having completed many burns over the last few years. I can now say that I also like and am going to stick with the Ridata -R 8x GO5's for a while. After having no problems at all burning loads of'em at 4x, I like'em
