improving avi (VHS rip) pic quality and sound

    hi, I have vhs rips that are avi format. Since its a vhs rip the picture quality is crappy and the audio has a "hissing" sound.

    Can anyone help??

    It's not very hopeful, but here you are.
    VirtualDubMod has video filters you can try and Audacity can adjust the audio.
    Download VDub and install the codecs.

    Run VirtualDubMod and drag the AVI file onto it.
    Streams > Stream List > Save WAV

    Run Audacity and drag the WAV file on to it.
    Edit as required.
    File > Export as newWAV.
    Close Audacity.

    Back in VDUB
    Streams > Stream List, double click on the audio stream (hatch marks) to disable it.
    Use the 'Add' button to open the newWav from Audacity.
    Right click on it and select 'Full processing Mode' then 'Compression'
    Select 'Lame MP3' and a suitable format (48000 128 CBR Stereo, or equal to or lower than the original) to test. Click OK then Video > Full Processing Mode > Compression > Xvid > Ok.
    File > Save as..
