Initializing my capture device will Lock Up my system

I'm using an MSI NX6600GT with a Core2 Duo E6400 @2.24Ghz
It runs Prime95 stable for at least several hours on the torture test setting.

My problem is that whenever I try to use the Video capture feature, my system will freeze up shortly thereafter. As soon as I get live video on my screen, it will take from .0001 second to a couple of minutes before it freezes up my system to the point where I can't Ctrl+Alt+Del, or even move the mouse. I need to hold in the power button on the case for a few seconds to cold-boot.

I have tried reformatting and reinstalling XP from scratch with no difference. I have also tried all the versions of Nvidia's WDM drivers I could find but this did not fix the problem. I looked for other drivers from manufacturers that used the same video capture chip (Philips SAA7115), but couldn't find any that would install.

I tried useing the video capture in:
Media Player Classic, VirtualDub, and Cyberlink PowerProducer all with the same problem of a hard lock shortly after initializing video in.

I'm hoping someone has an idea that may help me solve this problem.

 

I have an Idea. Keep in mind this is only a guess. But I had some simular problems with my computer and it ending up being cheap memory sticks. I must have went about a year with this problem (memory sticks slowly going bad), until I started getting CRC check errors using windows. I ran the memory test from a cd, and the memory failed very badly. I bought some good, well known brand, of memory, and it fixed every problem I was having with my computer. It has never worked this good.

You might have the same issue. It is free, just burn to cd and boot from there. It don't hurt to try it. Won't cost you nothing but a cd and some time.

I've tried MemTest86 and Prime95 to test memory. Both run fine without errors for hours.

 

is your computer acting strange in any other way? or is this the only thing you're having problems with?

 

Thanx for the help Ugc, but I got a new video card (7800GS) without VIVO. I installed my old card in my bro's computer and it captures just fine. Must be a quirk with my m/b chipset and that card.
