Is it necesary to install the NET framwrork 1.1 before 2.0? I am asking this only because when I installed v2.0 without v1.1, a program(not an MS program) asked me to install v1.1 in order to run it. The weird thing is that on the MS download site, both the downloads, i.e. of v1.1 and v2.0 link to the same file, http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/a/c/aac39226-8825-44ce-90e3-bf8203e74006/dotnetfx.exe EDIT: It turns out that the above file is the installer for v1.1 Then why the heck did MS link to that file when I was trying to donwload v2.0? One more thing, when I searched for v2.0 now, I found two pages, both referring to v2.0, and having these links: http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/6/7/567758a3-759e-473e-bf8f-52154438565a/dotnetfx.exe http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/3/f/a3f1bf98-18f3-4036-9b68-8e6de530ce0a/NetFx64.exe Note that the filesize of the dotnetfx.exe here is different from the first one. And the NetFx64.exe is MUCH bigger!
1.1 and 2.0 are two different programs, and for various reasons. 2.0 is not an update or upgrade from 1.1. The program you're using will need 1.1. Do not download them separately from MS's download sites. I've found the files listed there to have some problems getting the security updates from the Windows Update site. As a matter of preferrence and recommedation, use the WU site to do the 1.1 and 2.0 installs. Then go back and get the 1.1 SP1 security update, and 2.0's security updates. You may not experience any issues with WU by downloading and installing the redist package or 1.1 or 2.0...just recommending a path that kept me from having to worry about why 1.1 won't update to 1.1 SP1.
I downloaded v1.1, it's SP1, andv v2.0 and installed all of them one after the other. NetFx64.exe dosen't seem to work...may be it's for 64 bit OS'es.
