I had a problem with my old dvd writer, so i done a straight swap with a dvd writer i had in another machine. I took the Plextor px-504a out of one pc, and placed it into my packard bell pc, running windows xp, service pack 2. I have the same running on the other pc but when i put the plextor drive in the packard bell and boot up, when windows loads and i goto device manager, it says that neither drive exists! The dvd rom drive in the packard bell was not touched, no cables were knocked or anything, all i done was swap dvd writer drives but neither are recognised. I cannot even install any software for plextor as neither drive works. I have tried 'add new hardware' but as far as the pc is concered neither drive exists. I have checked connections again inside the pc but all cables are fully connected. Can anyone help me? Thanx.
First thing you need to check is to see if BIOS sees the drives, if BIOS doesn't, you need to disconnect all but one drive, test, and then connect both and retest, also check to make sure that they're both jumpered correctly master/slave OR cable select, if one is on CSL and the other on slave/master for example it probably won't work.
I work in IT and have found that many times if you edit your registry by going to [bold]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}[/bold] and delete the upperfilters and lowerfilters keys, that'll solve the issue about 90% of the time. Good luck.
