installing a different copy of windows over windows

    i got this version of windows xp sp2, but it's not workin like i thought. i have alot of apps installed. now i have a better copy of windows xp sp2, so if i install this one will all of my apps still work the same since i'm not formatting the whole drive?

    When you install a new O/S over an existing O/S it will format the drive. Seeing that the new version of Win XP has service pack 2 on it there is more security. Unfortunately, your current O/S will not recognize a different disk than the one originally used. There for you cannot do an update.

    If your first install of XP was a legitimate install, then go to microsoft.com and get the updates. The only other solution you have is to back up your computer. However, you may pull files from the backup but you may not pull programs from the backup.

    so, for instance, i had installed the software for my soundcard soundblaster xi-fi. if i install a new copy of windows it would do away with everything like that

    Yes. everything on your hard drive would be overwritten, including drives.
