Hey, I'm putting in a new slave hard drive and I purchased a 200GB ATA 7200rpm 8mb cache drive and come to find out, my master drive is SATA. Can I run an ATA with an SATA? There is an extra ATA 18-pin slot on my motherboard, would I just hook the new drive up to it and use the slave connection, not the master? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

SATA and IDE will run fine together. put the hard drive on a standard IDE connection as the master. the pc will still boot from the sata hard drive.

also 18 pin ata slots are not for hard drives... not only that they dont exist

Thanks dude. My Secondary Master and Slaves are being taken up by my DVD and DVD-RW drives. So that leaves my Primary slave and masters open. I have connected my New HD to the primary IDE and set it for master but when I boot, DVD Drives aren't there. It says they are Unknown Devices (in the BIOS. I need the CD-Rom to install the hard drive. Do you know how to get around this?

I am sure you went into your bios and set your IDE to auto detect right?
