This is probably a very stupid question but I have an acer laptop that had died. I have the recovery discs which put it back to its factory settings. Having previously used these and noticed that it wiped all the contents of the C drive Im guessing this is effectively a new install. Can I put the disc in my compaq desktop and change it to the acer configuration? Im thinking that as it wipes the C drive it will remove all trace of the compaq branding. Its more of a what if question than something I thought I would do on a Sunday afternoon! many thanks.
not likely. motherboards have serial numbers and other unique identifiers that indicate the manufacturer, among other things.
Thanks for the reply. I think instead of thinking of stupid questions I should just go put a film on and keep quiet ! Many thanks again.
I would say they are not similar at all. One is on an Acer laptop thats about a year old, the other is a compaq desktop that a few years old now.
The software will probably be oem , which means you only can use it with the computer it was sold with . Having said that, if you can get it to work with your other computer i am sure windows update will find the required drivers online.
most recovery software has a 'tattoo'to look for on the motherboard bios if it does not find it it will not load the software.
