usually with system preinstalls you'll need to get some less than fully legal software to fake that code, as they don't accept reinstalls. Annoying, but that's why they're cheap.

I was unsuccessful in reinstalling windows from an OEM system because they didn't give me the disc and then promptly went bust, so I never will get one. I'm ashamed to say I haven't yet replaced the disc.

That'll be a restore disc then, not the software itself. Generally M$ don't like you using these.

being a restore disk than you'll have other problems besides not able to log in. that restore disk is only for dell which is probably using different hardware than the hp.

It may work for the 30 days but you'll have trouble activating it due to the "windows genuine advantage". What a load of carp.
    Yes that typo is deliberate.

You would have to modify the restore disc so winblows install doesnt know its a oem disc. Then hopefully the key that goes with the restore disc isnt used on any pc and then you can activate it. If not there are <cough> <cough> humm evil things we cant mention on ad to make winblows think its activated and its legit so you can use it and d/l updates. It can be done as all my pcs are <cough> <cough> humm not quite original windows...LOL!:>

Well my PC is one of those but the laptop is still on its original install, but yet again it's a no-disc OEM install.

From what see, your XP goes with your Dell. Thats just a repair disc. Cause the company that i worked for bought alot of Dells and they came with the same disc. What i found out is, that CD can only be used with Dell systems. Even if you have the KEY it still won't work on other systems.

Its 6 discs right? Well its simple as combing all 6 discs into one folder on your desktop. Then cut out the unnecassary crap edited by ddp like extra programs. Then find the winnt.sif file and edit.....the winnt.sif is a unnatended setup answer file. Also your probaly going to have cut any files with the term bios in them......if you want what is it home oem...etc? You can try obtaining from torrent a win xp home oem disc and see if your key works with it. If it dont then its a matter of changing the settup.inf file from your restore discs to the new one you d/l. Then the key should work. As the settup.inf file tells install what kind of install it is...i.e. retail, oem....it can be done. If you dont feel comfortable messing with files on the discs you can mail me the 6 discs or upload them to rapidshare or something. Then I will work on it. But I will need your key that goes with the discs and i dont know if you feel comfortable passing that along. Personally I use a vlk that was <cough><cough> few years back from Pepsi and I dont have these troubles...LOL

Btw any mods that are reading this...I hope I didnt brteak te rules, because all I said was common knowledge that could be found on Google. I actually didnt speak how to break activation although if he is succesfull it should activate. As I have done it before....

The only rule you've really broken is not to use offensive language. Remember this is a public forum so anybody could be seeing what you and I write.
