Is this processor suitable for decent end gaming? I am looking to play games like Crysis on Decent graphics on a 40 fps and games like Oblivion and COD 4 and WAW on High settings (Not maximum) with about 40 fps in high octane situations and 50-60fps in calm situations if you know what I mean. Already set on a graphics card it's a Sapphire RADEON HD 4650, and its got 1GB of memory. Opinions much appreciated on the card as well. Also just out of interest what can the processor overclock to and is it worth it? Please do not point me to more expensive processors as I can not go above £190. Input much appreciated James W
the processor should be fine, but the video card is what would be holding u back. what resolution are you gaming at? the HD4650 isnt the best for gaming, but you can get highest detail with low enough resolution and no AA.
The CPU is alright, it won't run Crysis at max at 40fps, but that's kind of irrelevant, as that takes a very powerful graphics card anyway. The HD4650 is very weak for maxing out games, it's more designed as a basic home HD video / light gaming card. You can keep the CPU and get one of these to improve your games performance. Thanks for all the input guys, It has really given me food for thought. Also are Quad core processors good for gaming? The only reason I'm thinking about a new processor is because I went to the local PC hardware store and I said I had the Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2400 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s). Anyway he said that I needed a single core or dual core for gaming. But when I see how my PC performs on games I'm starting to think he was bs'ing. So what would be better for gaming? The dual core I specified or the processor I have in be more than suitable? Because if I don't have to buy a processor I can go psycho on a GFX card. <Now I like that! Thanks, James W. PS. Your PC underperforms in games due to the dire graphics card. While your CPU isn't the best, a 2.4Ghz Quad core won't make things any better. You would need a 2.8Ghz one to see a noticeable improvement, and even then, only if you had a very powerful graphics card as well.
Ha, ha, I think you misunderstood me. I have the quad core and I was looking at the dual core to buy because some guy in a PC shop told me to. What I was asking was should I stick with the processor I have (Quad core) or buy the processor stated in the title of the thread? Ok, the reason I thought you had the E6850 is that it's a really old CPU, I didn't even think they sold it any more. In any case, there is no reason to downgrade from a Quad core to a dual core for games, certainly not in this case. If it was a Phenom you had, maybe I'd say different. That graphics card is also very out of date. The HD4870 I posted you will match it, even beat it in a large number of games, and use half as much power in the process.

Seriously, you won't see an ounce of difference in your gaming performance unless you get a better graphics card. The CPU is not what's holding you back right now at all.
