    Hi,
I'm planning on getting a hardrive to use exclusively for capturing video, i dont need an extremely large drive, so the money i save there could potentially go toward making it an external drive. i dont have a firewire card but i have usb 2.0
will i lose a lot of quality by capturing directly to my external hd through the usb 2.0?

Using USB for sustained data transfer isn't advisable. Despite the bandwidth, it's not designed for those types of transfers and doesn't work well for it.

Additionally, you're prolly better off getting an Internal drive and an enclosure ... much cheaper option :)
