I'm not too technical so firstly I apologise about the wording that I use. I have a really old Toshiba laptop, (about 10 years old), it has the old internet connection socket. We use to have to use an adaptor when on dial-up to convert it from the telephone size to the internet size, if that makes any sense to you. But nowadays we have the new size ethernet connections don't we??? What I would like to do is buy a convertion adaptor to enable me to go online with it again. Someone has suggested that I buy an adaptor called RJ45. Would this be the right thing? By the way I can't have wifi. Many thanks for any responses and your patience
The model number is: PAT800E-C963-EN is that right? To add to this I live in the mountains in Spain and can only get satellite broadband, if that means anything to you??? Thanks a lot
Someone else told me about these, but cos I used to have a simple adaptor before, I thought that I would still be able to get some such gadget. How wrong I am! I was told that I'd need a "Type IV" and it should be 16mm cos it's a toshiba. Would that be right? Also, I would have to order it from Amazon or the like as there aren't any local ANY type of shops here let alone a PC store, Ha Ha Ha. Could you possibly check the UK Amazon site for me for the correct make and model please? I have cut and pasted the model that you gave me the link to and it doesn't show on the UK site. http://www.amazon.co.uk/ Can I not get anything USB style, just clutching at straws! Again thanks for your help
3tekgeek, read this link about your sig because if i see it again you will be banned off this site, your choice. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/874419/5304649 posts edited. jack3145, as you should have usb ports then can get a usb ethernet adapter. a rj45 cable(ethernet cable) plugs into 1 end of this adapter & the other end plugs into the laptop.
I finally bought an adapter rj45, but I still have a problem with it, so here's the story, (sorry) My husband has a really old laptop that I trying to make workable for him, (nothing more than that really). It's hard drive is only just over 6gb. It's so old that it doesn't have an ethernet socket. As a consequence I bought the said rj45 adapter, (He doesn't want to use my laptop as it is Win7 and he won't use anything more "complicated" than XP ha ha). The rj45 came with a disc containing it's drivers. I selected the XP set-up application and installed it sucessfully. Using our ethernet plug I managed to get online. It seemed to have configured itself, but I'm not so sure. It is an SR9600 USB to fast ethenet adapter. The driver is sr9usb.sys and it says connection type - Auto sense. Now I live in the mountains in Spain and can only get broadband by satellite and it is very slow, approx. 0.2 - 0.4mb, but it's enough to get by on. Now although I guessed that using an adapter would slow down the speed even further, this is ridiculous. Whilst updating Kaspersky it had been online for 33 minutes and had sent only 158 packets, (Don't know what that means but I know that it's not much), and received just 92. Is this right do you think Is it OK to just accept that it has configured itself? Or is there something else that I need to do? Thanks for any help. Jane
