I'd suggest Comodo Firewall, only because it's a kick ass firewall, scans for viruses, montiros network usage, lets you take control, and much more. But that's just my suggestion.

It sounds to me very much like you have some virus or trojan. Possibly the msn virus or a win32 derivative which is running a ftp server or sending spam email.

You need to run a good antivirus application. (AVG/Avast free versions are quite good enough.. every malware detection I see always has Norton or Symantec in the scans.. so it obviously doesn't work.. You might get a clue about it by pulling the internet connection and seeing if any applications start complaining. Check your windows firewall settings.. Windows firewall is perfectly adequate (TBH Comodo firewall is useless.. It disables the windows firewall yet doesn't do as good a job. I have exploits for it which will take control and pass me system information I can use)

So...usual malware procedures first, then check for any programs that regularly check for updates. Nothing should be constantly checking for updates.. once in 24 hours is quite enough. Don't have an email program also checking too often.. once every hour is enough.

Do you have democracy player installed? It can background and play these games, as can irc and msn applications.. especially msn. You haven't clicked a link in any chat application recently have you?

NetLimiter 2 Monitor allows you to identify the source of any unexpected internet activity on your PC.

The freeware version is all you need.
