what i've done in the past, before i restore my computer, i do copy the folder that says itunes to the external drive, if you have vista or xp it will be inside my music folder, when im done i just copy that itunes folder back into the my music folder in the new computer, once you install itunes, while itunes is starting, first make sure, you chose itunes to keep your folder organise, then once itunes opens all your music and artwork, even your song count will appear in itunes. just what ever you do, if itunes ask to erase and sync your ipod, choose no, that way you make sure all your songs are in itunes before you erase your ipod. i never had that problem but you can never rule it out.

Last time i used another software directly transfer the music between computer and ipod, which will not sync the ipod, you can have a try and get the free download from: SPAM
