It is the question on many peoples tongues around the tech world. Apple have sold over 32 million units since the launch in 2001. Many of you here like myself, have /have had an ipod.

Do you think it lives up to the hype? sure, it is a fashionable & stylish product, but is that all?

All you tech savvies out there, do you think the ipod units are worth the prices we pay? Is it a benchmark in the development of portable media? Or is it just another hype-fuelled craze....

    Give us your perspectives.

(I know this is a sensetive subject, so please give a mature answer, even if you are a genuine hater/lover of the ipod. remember, this is civilised discussion :)

First came the cd player, then the mp3 player, somehting that u just put into your computer and you put your favorite songs on it
then came the ipod, not the mp3 player u put your favorite songs on the mp3 player u put your library on. not to mention the wheel is the best idea since sliced bread. Having a mini and recently upgraded to a 60gig video, id have to say its a revolution

Good work Jazo, as this thread had slipped through my grasps. Anyway, I think the iPod has shown it's staying power and is more then a fad at this point. I can understand the many many reasons for it to be considered a fad, mostly many people seeing an iPod as a fashion accesory, to a certain extent. But the iPod is more then that, it's a very innovative tool, and even though it isn't the strongest mp3 player out there it does what it does [bold]extremely[/bold] well with very few problems [outside from the 1.1 firmware upgrade, which I'm not to happy with] That's pretty much all I have to say about the topic though :)

even though it is an extremly inovative tool it seems to be more of a fashon/status symbol even though ( some many argure) it may not be the most advanced it is sold the most because of the stlye/status symbol.

There are few players that match the iPods size, innovative interaction feature, and are just so user friendly. There is very little that's confusing about an iPod [except for maybe converting video's, but that isn't something iPod is about to go out and completely support] I didn't buy my iPod as a status/fashion accessory, I'm not saying that no one else does, as that would be silly, but I bought it because I find it to be a great tool with very good support [as long as you don't break the screen] and it's something that will last me for a few more years to come.

I two own an ipod and infact i am listening to it right now, and trust me I know how great they are anfter using my friend old vison touch? i think and also my brother having an i river the ipod is superior but there are things to be improved that other companies have learned from the ipods mistakes. I would like to see what the future holds for the ipod.

One of the iPod's faults is overall compatability with different formats. But I think that is all part of Apple's plan to try and push Apple products across the board. I think it is a wonderful marketing scheme and is probably doing themselves quite a bit of good. I'll elaborate further later :)

yeah, the folks at apple will do anything to make it hard on us if we're not using itunes to purchase our videos and music.

i still think that the ipods are a great product. the only thing missing is a better battery and games that you can store onto the ipod itself. also, it would be pretty cool if it supported a wider variety of prgrams, rather than all itunes, so you can use it as a zip drive and store documents on it. and, you'd think that the folks at apple who are developing the ipod screen would make it a bit more durable, lol. thats my story. :)

Yes. So long as you have the USB cable, you can use it just as you would a portable HDD :)

I think iPod certainly lives up to the hype, and is definitely not only a benchmark, but quickly becoming the standard of portable media. I bought my kids (9 and 11) shuffles for christmas, because I really liked the idea, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Then a month after I purchased the shuffles, and had them all set up to give on christmas day with music already downloaded, I woke up and changed my mind and decided on Dec. 23rd to go and get them the 2 gig nanos because of the fact that they are so much more versitile...no more need to carry cd's in the car, or on vacation etc. If you really think about it, I didn't pay a ton more that I would for a good quality portable CD player, but of course it is much more versitile and only a fraction of the size. My eleven year old listens to hers every single day...and all night. My nine year old still loves his, and listens often, but more importantly, he can enjoy the pictures he takes with his digital camera. When I started, I knew nothing about iPods, or Apple, but learned very quickly. I then also purchased a 60 gig for myself, because we as a family, love to travel, and it is not at all unusual for us to drive for 24 hours straight. I have converted about 20 of my dvd's to my ipod so we will never need to take a dvd with us again. One more thing, I always convert every movie that I download to an AAC file, so that we don't necessarily need to watch the movie, but we can still listen and enjoy (quite frankly, we are more likely to listen than watch anyway)! I say it is a revolution...and I love being a part of it! PS Sorry for the book!

well when i bought my iPod i saw it as a famous name, its a well known, high quality product but i also see it as a fashion icon too.

I could have chosen an Archos but i after researching into the iPods it grew on me. Its beautiful design, its 2.5" screen, etc. etc. etc.

However this could be a revolution in technology. Portable videos 10 years ago was a tv/video combi and now we have them on the tiniest of devices.

Another reason i looked into the iPod is its revolution and the publicity of the iPod nano. i would have chosen another brand but because the iPod was in the news and when i went looking for my mp3 player i got sooooooo drawn into the iPod.
