I do not believe it is possible, as it isn't really a speaker from my exploration of the insides of the 4G iPod. Even if you found a hack to do it, it would probably sound terrible.

That would be a pretty cool mod, if I can get my hands on someones 'broken' iPod I might take a look at replacing the built in speaker with a different one.

But if it is inside the iPod like that wouldn't it sounds really "muffled"?

If your modding your iPod that excessilvely I wouldn't mind drilling a few holes in the back of the case. The biggest issue would really be figuring out how to mod it to play the music out of that speaker. You could just splice the wires from the headphones but then it would always be on. I would need to do a lot of thinking before tackling the task.

It would be interesting if it worked. I imagine their will be a huge risk of "bricking" you iPod though. It definelty wouldn't be something I would try lol

Yea, it would be risky, I'm not about to try it. The ideal iPod would be the 4G just because there is a little more room to poke around in there and fit a small speaker in. I would probably run the wires to the headphone jack, and add some sort of switch to turn the speaker on and off.
