I am not an expert but I expect your ipod is toast. It could be a hardware failure. The old ones were well built but are still old. The new ones are built to die about 6 months after the warentee expires. Extened service contract is a must if you must have an Apple.

It might be a security feature. In the last 6 months there have been many units killed by itunes because it "thought" the user did something wrong. These usually could not connect to a PC. If your PC can still detect the ipod it is probably a hardware thing. You can copy your music from the ipod using file explorer after you allow explorer to view hidden files and folders.

You can scan ebay for ipod parts and try to make the repairs yourself. I would by a refurbished 16 g Sansa View for 60-70 USD. It will take an additional memory card (up to 32g). Since you can freely move files on and off the Sansa (NO SECURITY) there is little need to have more than 16g. 400 hrs of music does me for a month. I keep 10g and swap out the other 6 monthly. That is 150 albums. I have trouble listening to 150 albums in a month. The music never goes stale. The same would go for movies. These last longer than the new ipods play up to 32 hrs of music. Extened warentees are way cheaper. I got 2 yrs for 17 USD. They also play just about any kind of music format. The software on the mp3 player is at least as good as itunes.
