Is 2gig too much for a computer that does light gaming(RCT3 and other games like that)image editing and Video rendering? Thanks in advance.
No, its not too much. Those two gigs can really help your performance in those areas, but if you think its too expensive then, one gig shoud be enough.
I have heard that in some cases 2gig can actually hurt system performace more than help it. That is why I asked. Thanks Again.
Well you are misinformed! Where did you hear that? The only way RAM could slow down performance is through the latency/CAS timings, even then the difference would be made up through the amount of RAM installed.
Hey, Definatly 2 gigs is a very good amount of ram for a modern computer. However for light gaming maybe it would be better to place that money on a better processor? Just an idea. You could always drop down to 1.5 gig?
Ok, for the processor I was thinking of the Opteron 165 or the 2x 4400 which one would be better for me to use?
Well thats an intresting one. Well for gaming dual core has never been a good route to take. So in that sense the opteron wins. However the dual core in fact has a hugher clock speed. So i would recommend if it is LIGHT gaming go for the 4400 as it will be a faster cpu for everyday apps! However for heavier gaming go for the opteron or maybe find something in the middle? Its all up to you really!
If you were using Windows 98 or ME, then anything over 512MB of RAM actually slowed the system down, but with XP, the more RAM, the better.
I built a PC for my mate, it has an Asus MOBO with enough slots for 4 gig of RAM. I put in 2 gig & she flys! I would love for my mate to put in the full compliment, but I don't think he wants to shell out much more coin!
Same here, If i wanted to i could go upto 4 gig. But before that theres a lot more, more important things to dish out on!
About the only RAM issue that will slow a system down with XP has seemed to be having 2 different size/ speed sticks on the same channel. Thats more a motherboard issue than OS anyway so happy upgrades to all!
