my drive and all assoc. software( like any-dvd6.0.4.5, 1-click, x-copy.power-dvd,....you name it.) wont't even play, let alone burn any "newer" dvds. normally when you pop in a dvd, auto-run will detect, then play,or at least recognize the dvd. in my case i may as well be trying to play a slice of pizza in my drive!the drive is NEW, and worked fine for a few dvds. it's weird cause older titles or backup copys play/rip/burn w/no problem.maybe i'm just getting so frustrated that i'm overlooking something simple.

can anyone please help an angry white boy?

the drive is an LG 4166b w/ light scribe(if that matters)and ANY-DVD is up to date, for ripping/burning apps.but even for playing purposes, the new dvds seem to be invisible. why do the older ones work? firmware???? ....dude i'm confused.

wow you do have problems huh lol . usually a DVD you are having problems with will play on the PC but not on the standalone DVD player.

OK a couple things you can try uninstall and do a CLEAN reinstall of the programs. do you really need x copy? that i would get rid of if you can.

second try uninstalling and reinstalling your drive you can do this in device manager or use this guide

    http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/FAQ.htm

next try updating your firmware on your drive.

keep your PC clean also doing a disc cleanup and defragging often(at least once a week).

also is this your only drive ? and is it set on "Master"

    thanks for the reply.
i tried everything you mentioned yesterday(a few times actually), execpt un & re-installing all the programs(since none of them worked).what are the odds they all stop working properly @ the same time.
I was actually able to burn 2 newer dvds yesterday, and thought i was good to go....aparently not! I cant possiblt see having to un-install the drivers/drive whenever i want to burn a flick. whatever i did, i guess it was just luck that the drive recognized the dvds(i had tried to burn those particulal titles before w/ no results....so i was pretty stoked when the read @ burned no prob yesterday.
back to the damn drawing board!!!!

You would be surprised the number of times all or various programs stop working at the same time, why? Due to a corruption of the operating system, various malware programs, viruses, spyware, you name it. aabbccdd gave you a lot of good suggestions, one other is to check out this link to see if something has hit your operating system,
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263784
    Just a suggestion, may help.

thanks, i'll try it. by the way i forgot to mention re: master/slave.
the jumpers are set correctly. also i had "daemon tools" installed @ one time. un-installed it , but the virtual drives won't un-install, can't get rid of them(not sure if that matters). it did'nt effect the old drive, but since this one is new, who knows.
    thanks,

yeah this can cause your problems ,you need to get your machine clean.

when is the last time you you reformatted??

OK you need to download a few things to rid your machine of these problems. heres a few to start with highjackthis ,spy sweeper, ewido,CCleaner and SmithfraudFix

what virus scan program are you using?? remember Norton is one of the worse. a few good ones would be Trend Mirco ,NOD32 ,AVG or Avast

if you know how to use these programs download and run them in safe mode. to get better help go to this forum and post your highjackthis log.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/166

if you havent reformatted in a while (like in over a year) you should .then get some good programs on your machine and keep it clean

narcismo, if you have been downloading music/movies etc. and haven't reformatted in a while and have all theses problems its probably time for a reformat windows just get bloated after that long without one. and the fall out is all kinds of weird problems with your machine. you may be able to dig out without reformatting but unlikely. thoses guys in that forum can def help you out.

cincyrob, i been in there some this week but not alot had a problem with a few members over a thread and had to work it out so i was laying low lol. plus my sig was a little different this week NO "Adriana" lol ,heres the info on HJT

HijackThis is a powerful malware search & destroy program. It scans your computer and creates a logfile for you to examine what to remove. You can save the log as a textfile and use it with online HijackThis logfile analyzers (hijackthis.de) or post it to our forums for others to have a look.

    down it here

    http://www.filepedia.com/desktop_software/desktop_security/hijackthis.cfm

its a great free tool everone should have

well, i've litterally turned my computer inside-out in the past few days. managed to remove all the mal-stuff ect. but the dvd burning/playing problem is still here, pissing me off, on an otherwise clean machine.

aabbccdd, tried to take your advice and reformat, but i cant find my op. system disc lol!! figures!

OK! now i'm on a mission! i'm sure reformatting would probably solve my dilema. but now i'm hell-bent on not only fixing the problem, but finding out what the hell it is first.one thing i have'nt done is update the firm ware, i seriously doubt thats the problem...but...any input is open-heart-edly welcome :)

am i really the only one to post this problem?

aabbccdd, thanks again for the reply. i doubt that will work, dont get me wrong, i'll try it. but if other media programs, and more importantly my dvd drive don't even see the movie, well.......i'm sure you can see where i'm discouraged from even trying. remember when you recommended that i get rid of x-copy? well i have'nt had that program on my computer in over a year, just wanted to see if another program would recognize a dvd on the drive. it did'nt, @ i promptly removed it.

by the way, i took your advice and did a clean install of all related dvd apps(other than windows media player).again no satisfaction. :-(
    p.s.
flashing/updating firm-ware kind of scares me(before i make a paper weight out of my drive).
well,... collateral damage scares me(obviosly). if you can help @ all
let me know, or if not , let me know.
    thanks, as always,
