    Hello!!

Cutting to the chase, I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-S90PS (notebook), which comes with the MatSHITa UJ-812 CDRW/DVD-RW.

It was working good but since some days I cannot burn DVDs, I can still read them and burn CDs but the DVD burning function finishes with an error eeeeevery time. I'm copying the last log but if you want a previous one I can post it later too. I've tried with different DVD blank media (different brands), and none of them work fine. I have Nero 7 and also the latest firmware for my DVD (I think). So, I cannot see where the problem is. Please, any kind of help will be really welcome.

Thank you for everything in advance!!!
    Regards,
    Ricardo.

Has it been working good with Nero7 ?

    Recorder doesn't recognize disks properly.
Which brand is being used and is it on the list recommended by the drive maker.

i think your burner's firmware is up to date according to this - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1780 however as attar pointed out, your firmware is not recognising the media you're using. just so we know what media you've got there, download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm and use it to 'identify' one of those discs you're trying to burn with. it won't help you to use the discs but it will help us see what you're using and we can maybe suggest media that will work. i'm guessing you're using media that's newer than when your firmware was last updated (which was October 2004 according to that link above). This happens with burners, they get superceded when newer models come along and the older ones can no longer keep up with newer media.

as attar pointed out, this is what your burner's saying about the blank media you're using there -
This 3line paragraph is an example of what you'd see if the firmware could recgnise the media properly -

    Thanks guys,

I downloaded the program and tried to recognize my media but it says

[01:04:14] ERROR : Unsupported Medium Detected
[01:04:14] INFO : Disc Identification Requires DVD or Blu-Ray Recorder And Matching Media

I dont have any more blank DVDs, do I need them blank for the Identification? I bought my DVDs in a 100-en store here in Japan. I've been buying them for more than half a year and the problem is just happening some two weeks ago. I had Nero 6.6 and I thought that maybe I had to upgrade it, I did that but still is not working ok.

I'll keep trying anything you think might help. If I need to buy a blank one, I'll do that tomorrow because now everything is already closed (1.00am).

    Thanks for everything,
    Regards,
    Ricardo.

just use one you've already burnt and 'identify' that.

as to buying more media, don't (potentially) waste more more money on discs 'til we've figured out what discs you can use.

try vso inspector too - you can get it here - http://www.vso-software.fr

    @ Dadagori hi :)
when you activate DVDIdentifier .where it says in blue writeing
    Disc Identifier it starts on
DVD+R/+RW as default.... make sure you click on the next one along
    DVD-R/-RW before clicking identify
other wise it will show the error above

    it's me again...

I tried with the three of them, with the same DVD and none of them recognized it...then I changed to another DVD of the same brand that I burnt previously and still was not recognized. The same message Error or N/A....

As I said, I was using those DVDs before and they were working OK, I don't know why all of a sudden they started failing. Any other info you might need?

    Thanks for your time,
    regards,
    Ricardo.

UPDATE: I'm using the DVD-R/RW tab in the DVD Identifier...

    Hey guys,

I was trying to recognize some other DVDs and realized that none of them is being recognized by any of those programs...I've tried Victor, taiyo and even sony (the same brand of my laptop)...

Checking the DVD InfoPro log, I noticed that:

    Media Information
    Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
    [bold]Drive doesn't support media code[/bold]
    Format Capacity 3.87GB(4.16GB)
    Book Type DVD-R
    Media Type DVD-R
    Manufacturer Rated Speed Unknown
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
    Write Strategy Speed Not Defined
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Data area end sector 1EF53Fh
    Linear Density 0.267um/bit
    Track Density 0.74um/track
    Number of Layers 1

    Complete Media Code

I don't know what's going on here, my firmware is in japanese...would that be a problem? if so, why it was working for more than one year without any problem and suddenly started failing? I've used nero all the time and it did always a good job...

Thanks again for you help guys,
    I really appreciate it,
    Regards,
    Ricardo.

    PS: I'm afraid I'm going to sleep now...so I won't reply in some hours...thanks!

@creaky, friend I'm no expert, but could dadagori have the Iso clicked, as you had and found that out when using Nero 7, and after unclicking it it began to work. I just noticed all the true statements in relation to the Iso section. I'm just asking you my friend as you know Neor logs. Have a good day.

    @creaky
the drive should still recognize the media and DVDinfo should still recognize the disk type notwithstanding the type of burn?
Does this burner still play disks?
