CAPABILITIES: I used to be able to burn my home movies captured on my Sony camcorder using an AV/DV converter 1394 connection to my computer which runs Windows XP OS. The software I used to edit my movies was Adobe, but later I changed to Nero Recode 2. What I do is after capturing on a FAT32 file 150 GB with Adobe, I then copy the compressed file to C: (an NTFS) and recode the VOB files using a Nero 2 Recode import. This used to work fine.

HARDWARE: The DVD burner I have is a standalone component using a USB 2.0 connection and USB 2.0 PCI add on. It is a Hitachi device which is configured to burn DVD+R, DVD-R, etc at 16X and lower. The IDE ATA/ATPI controllers in my computer are set to DMA if available, both primary and slave. I generally only use 4x or 8x to burn my movies and down mix 2-channel stereo.

PROBLEMS: 1) The CPU useage is averaging around 90-100% when I attempt to burn.
It makes a not pretty grind noise inside the machine. I've checked the hard drive using device manager and it says it's fine. I'm worried the Intel Pentium 4 2.5 Ghz is wearing out. 2) The Nero Recode 2 import encoding and burn piece are fine, but I get a message that says cannot complete "burn at once" task OR I get a "burn successful" but when I attempt to play it in a standard DVD player it either indicates DVD playback function not avaiable or is choppy and stopped.

WHAT IVE DONE SO FAR: My test project is 19 minutes in length and compressed into Nero Recode 2 format. I have cleaned my registry and tested for viruses using MS products.

    1) Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this problem?
    2) What are the absolute minimal service settings to be enabled to reduce CPU useage for a DVD burn to work?

My heart bleeds for you totally on this one - so much so that after about a month of trying everything to get my 1394 camera recognised by SP2 I finally quit and bought a USB camera.

I was disgusted by the usual vendor response - in this case SHARP that they did not support the model.

I checked many a forum and found that SP2 screwed up firewie connectivity.

I updated any drivers I could lay my hands on for oth the caera and its connectivity software........... I even downloaded the so called windows hotfix to correct the hotfix.......

Nothing worked - absolutely Nothing! Nada! Period!

The USB cam for now interface is as sweet as a nut and even supports DV- Dv connection. New one is a JVC GRD-290. It lacks on one or two of the features of the sharp though. Seems you now need your old cam to do the hard stuff and the new one as a means of getting the movie onto your PC!

It sucks! It really, Really Sucks!!! Windows SP well and truly Mucked everything up and they (Microsoft)failed to fix the problem. And it seems that The cam companies who bundled their cams with Firewire conveniently just washed their hands of the whole mess.....

My Firewire cam incidentally cost around €1200.00 and is now virtually useless as far as editing goes........ My USB2 baby cost around €450.00

Sorry I cannot offer any more positive advice than 'Go out and buy a new Cam'. So horrible has been my own experience on this very matter!

Reading further into your post - you seem to work pretty methodologically.I work similarly and yes typically when encoding I cannot do much else, so strangled is my CPU memory. I have lots of it- but te more memory you put on your pc e it virtual, Video, Ram or whatever- the more these processesses seem to take!

As for the grinding noise - I don't get that on the PC but et lots on the burner - a USB2 Pioneer DVR-108 16x. The drive never even squeaked for the first 3 weeks or so and then it turned maically into a grinder!

Reading the final part of your post, I would suggest you go into the nero log file and save it as a text file. Omit your serial number and post the final part of the log from the divider secion as a new post here. Title it dear Creaky!!! He's been pretty helpful to me here on a few occasions and has a pretty good idea of what he's talking about! I'm sure he can offer an answer or two as to what's happening to the burn process......

Hope it works out for you!

Have you tried importing the video using the firewire with NeroVision so it will come in as an .avi file. Recode if for importing a non-copy protected DVD, not just capturing video. But it is funny that you can't get the firewire to work because I could not get the USB to work, but the firewire was fine.

Maybe I should not suggest this since NeroVision 4 is having some problems playing files and I am waiting for an update past version 4.1.0.15. For now, version 4.1.0.9 works OK.

Also, if I were you, I would be capturing to the NTFS partitions since it handles larger file sizes without breaking them up.
