Hey guys. I wasn't sure exactly where to post this. But I guess this seems appropriate.

I've been playing backup movies on my brand new Sony Vaio laptops and Toshiba DVD player for a while now. And I'm suddenly noticing that they won't play original DVDs anymore that I've purchased or rented.

The movies are backed up by a friend of mine. He is using TDK DVD+R DVDs. So far, ONLY burnt/backup DVDs (movies) are able to play on my laptops. But I can pop a regular backup or original CD or even a PS2 game, and the laptop "knows" its in there. But when I insert any orginal DVD movie, it makes a clicking sound and says "Please insert a disk" or "No disc found", etc.

My question: Is it possible that because I've played only TDK back up dvd movies for a while, it might have compromised my laptops & dvd player so that it won't play original DVDs anymore?

    Thanks!

Is it possible that you have used your 5 allowed region changes on your DVD burner and you are currently stuck with an incorrect region setting.

This would not impact on burnt movies or CDs but could impact on originals.

or you can try to re load your codecs and see if for some reason it deleted codec or two which would allow for DVD-ROMs to play! download these and install..... it won't hurt your machine:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

then I would look at your settings of the program being used to view your DVD and see if you got all the files associated (media type allowed) checked off so it will allow it to view the DVD! sometimes different programs set off settings for other programs and then the program you are using acts differently.

what Colw said is also possible but I would do all of this first before buying a new burner or player. but if you get a REGION FREE player/program then your DVD should work! You can also install a player program that would install the correct codecs and REGION FREE settings and your DVD might work again! worth many different tries to accomplish same thing! good luck.

try reloading your dvd player software add divx to your computer too that has most codecs and its a free version but if the drive is clicking it sounds like the servo in the drive is faulty i used to chip playstations and configure dvd players the servo can gain or loose speed over time which gives the problam u r having on home dvd players when the dvd player makes that noise its normally on a coppied disk but it will play origionals the same happens with audio cd players when there wear out they stop playing all disks and start making that clicking noise so try the software first but sound like you have a faulys lens servo in the drive

I have heard clicking sounds from my player and or burner when it can't read the disk itself! adn my drives are just fine! When the drive is having problems with reading the disk then I would clean it real good then try again! After cleaning MOST of the time that solved my problem!
