Hi, i've been using my samsung SH-S202N for about six months with no problems, i then used it in a new pc build, it installed windows xp as normal.

I had to do a windows repair some time later but half way through it stopped with an error, can not copy D:\I386, midregdb.exe, after trying a new windows xp cd i had to cancel and proceed , when windows booted up i got this error: Fatal error during installation, HID Non User Input Data Filter.

I then had four failed burns with this error: DMA-driver error, i decided to reinstalled windows thinking it would solve the problem with the drive but when i inserted a cd or data disc it would not auto play and when i clicked on properties or tried to play the disc it would freeze, program not responding etc.

I rolled back the drivers and it did play a cd but just once before it stopped working again, i replaced the IDE cable and it started to work again but it still would not copy the same files from the windows cd, i can't even do a internet explorer repair as it won't copy the files, all the files in question are in the i386 folfer of the windows installation cd.

I tried my new hd dvd drive in the new pc and it worked perfectly and copied the files straight away from the windows cd, done an ie repair in about 30 seconds, is there any software issues that can cause a dvd drive to mulfuction as it's still not working correctly or is it faulty or maybe the mobo, thanks

Now that you have your Windows problems took care off, try going to device manager and uninstalling the driver for your Samsung. Then reboot and let Windows reinstall the device.

First thing that i did, sorry i was extremely tired when i wrote my post, it's obvious that the mobo or dvd drive is fulty, possible head alignment this time.

It caused all the problems in the first place with a failed windows repair, it's the third or forth samsung i've had, none have lasted more then six months, one just a week.

Sad thing is it's retail and can't get any response from samsung to have it repaired.

Why do you continue to buy them? Try Liteon.

The first one came with a retail pc, it lasted a week, it was replaced and lasted until i sold the pc.

Bought the SH-202N for my first build because it came highly recommended, it lasted six months and this is the replacement, didn't have any trouble with it until i installed it into this new build, thats was my problem, was it the mobo or dvd drive.

It can't copy certain files from the windows cd during a windows repair or internet explorer repair, which are both in the i386 folder on the cd but can install windows???

But after trying everything, cables, software, settings etc i put in my hd dvd drive and it can copy from my windows installation disk, so i guess it's the dvd drive thats faulty, it's just strange how it worked perfectly before i installed it in this build.

Samsung will not reply to any of my e-mails for an RMA even though it's still got two years left on the retail warranty.

They are very, very, slow to reply. You may hear something yet.
