Hey guys, I have a problem with my parents' computer and I'm almost sure it's the power supply, but I'd like to check with you before I buy one.
Since we bought this computer, whenever you turned it on, it would start, then before anything else happened, it would shut down, and a few seconds later it would start without a problem. My parents got used to it so they never did anything else.
A few months back, the power supply fan began making a weird noise at startup, then it would quiet down and work as normal.
As of a few days ago, whenever I turn on the computer, it would power up, but nothing would happen. No beeps, it didn't load windows, no video signal, nothing. After a few tries, it would start, but then it would randomly lock up. The image became all distorted and weird and it stopped responding. The strangest part is that one time it started up normally, I plugged in the speakers because I had forgotten. A weird static sound came out of them and the computer locked up just like before. As of today, it rarely loads windows and everything else, it just starts up, and the power supply fan is sounding even worse.
Do you guys think I only need a new power supply, or maybe there's something else wrong?
    Thanks a lot.

the fact that the psu fan was making a weird noise when 1st started up but quiets down shows that the problem is the psu. get a new one.

Thanks a lot, I figured out that was the problem, I just needed someone experienced to confirm it. One thing I forgot to mention is that one of the times the computer did start up, it detected a floppy disc drive. This is really weird because the computer doesn't have one, it only has a DVD drive, and the few times the computer has started, it still shows the floppy drive is there. Do you think that will get fixed too with the new PSU?
