Is there another tool that would be better than Nero's to check the quality of a dvd burn? I am finding that I can put the same disk through 3 times and each time come up with a different Quality Score.

That seems pretty inaccurate to me. Is it the tool or the craftsman? I admit I don't know this program inside and out...

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi san_man
My method of checking the quality is playback then being able to rerip the disc much later.
Some drives are better than others when scanning the discs. My pioneer gives me low scores but the discs have no problems - even a few years later. My Liteon will give them a higher score.
Keep the speed lower when doing a scan and see if that gives you a more consistent score.
Stick with good media like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Keep the drives firmware up to date.
My rule of thumb with good media and a good drive for burning is half the drives max speed as long as the media is rated at that speed. I.E. 16x drive with 8x media - I burn at 8x.
What media are you using? Burn speed?

I'm using Verbatim +R 16x (injet printable, if that matters), and TY G02 -R 8x (also printable).

Two systems: IBM Netvista 6794 P4 1.6G CPU with 1.5G RAM and XP Pro sp2, Lite-On SOHW-1673S. Second is: Gateway 838GM P4 3G with 1.5G RAM and XP Media 2002 SP2, TS-H552B (Samsung? Factory installed).

I have just received my new Plextor PX-740A/SW burner, and LG L49-8164BCA DVD-ROM. I'll be installing them this week in the Gateway.

And, yes, I burn at half speed.

    Hey, thanks for your help!

Sorry, I meant I usually burn at 4x for movies.

    No problem san_man
Try burning those Verb's or TY's at 8x speed on the LiteOn. Then run a quality scan.
On the TS (toshiba-samsung) drive you may want to try 8x on the +r and 6x on the -r TY's.
I've seen several quality scans here where when good media was burned faster than 4x (usually 8x max - media rated 8x or higher)on good drives the quality score improved (and sometimes playback). The newer the media
Try 8x on the Plextor too when you install it - run a scan to check the quality. Plextor drives use the Plextool for this.
In the end though it's what work best for you and your set up.

I know I'm getting rid of it in a few days, but I just need to know so I can understand all of this better!

My Samsung burner doesn't seem to like the Verbatim disks. Or, at least, Nero CD-DVD Speed doesn't. The TYs are getting a Quality Score of 98-100, while the Verbatims rarely rank above 84, often scoring 0. Should I just try watching them anyway, or are they actually coasters?

Yes try and watch them. They may be fine. Great scores on the TY's btw.
I'm running a scan right now on a Ritek burned almost 2 years ago that I know has low scores but is playable and can be reripped w/o a problem. Well as of last week anyhow :) I'll post it shortly.
How about your firmmware is it up to date on all your burner's?

Ok here's the horrible scan!! After seeing this I thought I might have imagined ripping it last week. Tried again just now - 6 mins w/ decrypter. No errors.
