Is stereo pre-amp necessary?

My PC sound card output is connected to my stereo system and my stereo pre-amplifier is broken. Do I really need my stereo pre-amplifier because I can connect my PC output directly to the power amplifier and use my sound card volume control or Winamp volume control.I only listen music via my PC (both CD & mp3).
In general, by eliminating the pre-amp, should I not get better quality music, free of any "colouring" introduced by the pre-amp (whether cheap or expensive!)?
Any comments from my audiophile friends?
    Thanks

well as long as the signal output from you PC is strong enough to drive your power amp, then I don't see any problems with it. About quality, most pre-amps are meticulously designed to help elimiate noise, so unless its a really crappy pre-amp, there probably won't be any significant gain in quality from bypassing your preamp.
