After some snooping around I've found that PIODATA has put their name on a range of media such as Lead Data, Ritek and Taiyo Yuden. They've also been known to pass off the crappy Lead Data media as Pioneer OEM so I'm very suspicious of the Riteks being genuine or even Grade A if they are and I'd bet my left you-know-what that the Taiyo Yudens are as fake a Pamela Anderson's you-know whats.

In other words it's the "Memorex Syndrome" - you don't know what you're going to get.

I could very well be wrong but until I see a compelling reason to change my views they aren't changing.

Neph-you're looking a little wobbly on that unicycle ;)

Thanx for the info, I suspected as much. To bad of a success rate not to.

Not that I was going to change from my beloved branded G04's anyway.

these have worked great for me as have prodisc. I use both very frequently, whichever one I get the best deal on and who has it at the time is where I buy.

This is what I know!!! Piodata will have different colour inserts inside. All for different brands. In UK Piodata only use Ritek dye, and very very popular!!! It is A Grade Ritek dye!!! It comes up with GO5 on a alcohol test. And its 8x!!!

Nephilim if you have not tested Piodata 8X then please don't knock it. Its really not fair as you are a well respected geezer on this forum and people read what they see and take it in.

You need to test them before mouthing off like that!!! All you hear is word of mouth and that is no good!!! Sorry to be rather blunt mate!!!

I have been using Piodata 4 x with logo and white top for my backups and they are prob. the best discs I have used in a long while!!! Both are Ritek GO4 dyes.

Now I have changed to 8 x white top Piodata they are even better!!! www.bigpockets.co.uk, www.bulkmedia.co.uk and www.ukdvr.co.uk all have them!!! But they are all UK companies!!! All have Piodata (Pioneer Brand) Ritek GO5 8x White top inkjet printable!!!

I have heard also in US they have a mixture of Gigastorage and Ritek it really depends on what you get!!!

I just bought some Piodata 8X inkjet printable yesterday. The company sold me the disks also gave me a copy of a certificate from Ritek certifying Piodata are A grade. I believe what I see.

I would like to show you the certificate, but I can't upload to the site.

Another good way to test your media is to setup a temp file & use dvd decrypter to copy it back on to your hard drive if it will copy it all, then u got a good disc,if it don't u got bad clusters on that disc.Mind u now a lot of DVD Players will play a Disc with bad clusters. You just can't make a copy of it,if it goes bad. This to me seems to be the fastest way to check my Disc's.Then I just delete the temp file.
I always make 2 copies anyway one to use & one to keep just in case the one I use becomes damaged & I need a new copy. This is the cheapest way to save my Movies. As I'm quite frugal with my money,& wait till I catch a sale on blank media then buy large quantities.I only buy RitekG04's & ProDiscS03's,both under $.50 ea.,before shipping. Not always is best to buy just because they advertise free shipping. But I do look for that too

Yes, you ran across a running commercial for PioData. Seems to happen quite often anymore, forum commercials that is. When anyone is bored, they start a thread similar to "who likes Ritek". How we got a PioData commercial in a thread named "is the ritek media any good" is interesting.

Londor, as a resident expert, you should share your information on the Ritek ripoffs and involvement in selling low grade media and the grading that Ritek does and how they sort it out through various vendors. I should have paid more attention to the location of that post of yours. It would have been an additional proof you could use to show how bad Ritek can be, forum info and all.

Me, I think I can put my trust in good companies like Meritline and the Ritek product. A good product and a great guarantee. Instances I'm familiar with, they paid shipping when there was a problem. Afterall, no product is perfect.

So far the majority of users haven't embraced PioData. However, the brand is sold by some reputable companies, Meritline included . Then some companies sell Verbatim made by CMC. Still wondering about the commercial in a Ritek thread. Anyway, maybe PioData will eventually get away from being a 3rd rate brand, who knows. But first, they'll have to earn a better reputation in the real world. Blurbs on a forum won't do it for them.

That link Nephilim added at the beginning of the thread has some good info. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Anyone reading this thread should at least profit by checking out that link. Londor, you'll love it, they grade media.

I used some Piodata once and they were Ritek G04. Had no problem with them except that genuine Ritek is cheaper. I have lately switched to Prodisc mostly because they are cheaper than Ritek and the last 300 I got were MCC coded. Haven't had had any coasters yet and I have had a few with my last batch of branded ritek. I don't think the +R Prodisc are that great, but at least for now the -Rs are about as good as you get.

I wasn't sure who was manufacturing all the PioData discs. Seems they're using some good manufacturers as well as poor, they had some low end stuff with the Lead Data media. I just wonder if the poor stuff is still being sold. Goes to show it is more the manufacturer than the disk brand. Those MCC (Mitsubishi) are from a quality manufacturer as are the Ritek. Sometimes with the various brands, you don't know what you bought until you get it home and check one of the discs for the manufacturer code. Hope your luck holds with the media purchases.

Seems john179 and I learned a similar lesson. I'd purchased 2 large quantities of memorex and they were manufactured by Ricoh (a top manufacturer), but the last small batch wasn't. Seems Memorex switched to CMC for more of their media. I'm no longer happy with Memorex. Just threw that in to point out how a person can get burned when a brand changes manufacturers. CMC isn't worth the Memorex price, or I don't think so.

Speaking of Memorex though, Prodisc made some of their -RW media. Fuji is selling some of the same discs sold under the ProDisc label. Speer sells ProDisc, but the manufacturer codes are different on the batches I know of. If you run out of Prodisc and need some quick replacements Fuji is a good bet. Their -R Video discs (not Data) are made by ProDisc. Fuji +R Video media is made by Ricoh. That info is correct unless they changed manufacturers (can't tell when they do those changes). I always check my purchases before I start burning. It's easier to get a refund if you haven't started using the merchandise.
