Power DVD has been working fine forever - now it refuses to play. Also MP10 refuses to play? Tried in both my DVDR and DVDRW - same issue. Power DVD loads - hangs - crashes to desktop. MP10 is the same - hangs and throws up an error. I have given up caring why. I have re-Installed XP and swapped the IDE cable. I have playback in DVD Shrink so basically it's one of those pain in the ass Microsoft issues that I have no energy to sort. It could be the catalyst drivers? 5.7 - but it was working fine with those installed? So basically is there a free DVD decoder plugin I can install in MP10 and get basic playback - don't need anything fancy - at least I can rule out 100% a hardware issue - although I am 99% sure there is nothing wrong - unlikely both ROMs are faulty on DVD playback but work fine on everything else. I had XP SP1 and Zone Alarm5 running before - now I have SP2 and Zone Alarm6 - so the only common element is Catalyst 5.7 and my ROM's.
I have uninstalled Power DVD and installed WinDVD7 - and that has sorted it. Still makes no sense why Power DVD has stopped working - I can only assume some kind of issue with it and Catalyst 5.7 - although I am sure it was working with these drivers - I could be mistaken. Trouble is this WinDVD is a timed Demo thing - is Zoom Player any good? As that has a free version. Or is there a free version of WinDVD? I can't see one.
Just curious, did it stop working after you did the media player 10 update or install ?. I have a problem where I can play video files on 9 but not on 10. Obviously this is a codex problem or directdraw.dll command problem but haven't figured out which yet.
The only thing I possibly installed was Catalyst 5.7 drivers - I didn't load up PowerDVD the second I did it - it was weeks later and so I can't remember if it ever worked with them or if the last time I used it was with Catalyst 5.6 installed. I tried NGO drivers - they are based on 5.7 and that didn't sort it. Now I know the 5.8 drivers are out so maybe that has sorted the problem. I actually didn't try anything in WM9 - it was after an XP update so it will have been MP10. I have MP10 installed at work and Power DVD is fine - as is MP10 with DVD. AND I have Catalyst 5.7 installed? We had a version of WinDVD floating round at work - it came free with something so I nabbed that (Shhhhhh) and it is way better than PowerDVD.
